Utensils/Dishes

Does your LO use dishes when you give them food?  Is your LO using any utensils yet?  Just curious to see what others are doing.

DD got some forks for Christmas so we have just started to use them, usually she can get food onto the fork but then will use her hand to pull it off the fork and put it in her mouth, ha  And we usually just put her food on her high chair tray, otherwise she will play with the plate and dump her food.

Re: Utensils/Dishes

  • We've been doing plates and forks lately. She likes eating with a fork. She is far from perfect at it, but I think she gets a kick out of it. She will eat a few pieces with the fork, get impatient and use her hands to shove a few in her mouth, and then go back to her fork.

  • DS sometimes uses a spoon, he has a hard time with it though, I only give it to him with potatoes and oatmeal.  This way he can learn the function and then we can master the picking up.

A plate we do very rarely, he still likes to put it on his head or the floor

  • She will use the plate for some of the meal and then dump it. I just started giving her a fork and she tries a little, but it usually ends up on the floor pretty quickly.

  • We have been using plates and bowls since he was 11-12 months old.  The first 2 weeks we started with plates, I had to hold it down on the tray, or he would throw it on the floor.  Now he mostly leaves it alone, though sometimes I have to quick to catch it before it flies off the tray. DS likes to swipe it off his tray when he's done.

He has been using a fork since 13 months. Took him 2-3 days to figure it out. We only use it at breakfast for fruits. He has no trouble getting the fruits into his mouth, but 95% of the time I have to pierce the fruits for him.

We haven't used spoons because DS no longer eats yogurt. And I haven't tried I giving him soup (afraid of the mess).

  • We use forks, but I have to help him pierce the food. We use a plate inconsistently.

  • I have a thrower so haven't offered a plate. I occasionally set out a dork but he couldn't care less. Any recommendations on suction plates? The munchkin suction bowls are awful for the record.
Honestly, I think they are all awful! We have a boon one which is ok sometimes, but not great.

  • She started using a spoon last week and has improved daily. Now can even scoop peas up and bring them to her mouth without dropping them. We only have really stupid baby forks, so not really using them, but she's happy for me to put something on a fork into her mouth.

She easily eats out of a bowl, hit and miss with a plate. We've given up on her high chair, so she wanders around/sits on a picnic blanket to eat.

  • We use plates bowls always but he likes to grab and swipe them off his tray. He has been great with spoon since 7 mos or so. Bad mom he was used to playing with plastic spoons at 6 months while i grocery shop
    Toddler eating is messy! Ugh

  • We have been using a bowl since he started eating and around thanksgiving switched to plates. He loves having the plates with the divided sections. He will sometimes pick up the plate and try to lick it clean. He has been using spoons on his own since about 11 months. He can feed himself yogurt, hummus, guacamole, etc. We also use a fork. He prefers a big person fork and will steal mine if I don't give him one. He has recently started to be able to stab foods himself. He likes to feed others with the fork as well.
