Breastfeeding

allegra D

I have been to urgent care twice in the last week since my Dr is on vacation. 1st trip told me I had allergies and to take Allegra. I figured if it was allergies I would skip it, since I know most allergy meds are baby for milk supply. I went back yesterday because I had gotten my mom and son sick, so clearly not allergies. They told me I have a sinus infection and they gave me an antibiotic, but also said to take allegra again. I told them I was nursing and they assured me it was fine. I still asked the pharmacist when I went to pick it up and she said that they sudafed in it would keep baby up along with drying up my milk and said she wouldn't take it if she was me. Has anyone taken allegra while nursing? Did it effect your milk supply or keep baby up? Am I being a crazy first time mom? I'm not taking it currently, but I feel my headache would go away if I did, but a baby who sleeps and not losing my supply are way more important to me.

Re: allegra D

  • After first trimester, my allergy induced asthma flared back up, and I had to start taking Allegra every day again to prevent my asthma. It was a lesser of 2 evils situation, since they felt the risks associated with Allegra use during pregnancy was less than an asthma attack and those meds (I had a week long asthma hospitalization with my first pregnancy). I continued using Allegra daily (not the D because that shouldn't be used during pregnancy/nursing due to drying) through nursing my first 4 months since my LO was born 4/30 just in time for allergy season! I never had a supply issue even though I took the medicine daily, and my LO has always been a good sleeper. I'm not a doctor, obviously, but I just wanted you to know that I have nursed when taking Allegra, along with going through about 6 months of my pregnancy taking it daily....and my LO came out fine, along with no sleep or supply issues while nursing. I was glad when fall came and I could stop taking it, but a week or so of usage would be NBD to me.

  • I would take straight Allegra or any other antihistamine but not anything with a decongestant. You can combat the drop by upping your water and letting baby nurse often.

  • thanks for your advice. The first Dr. said just allegra and the 2nd Dr. I saw said allegra D. I definetly won't take the D, but if I don't feel better by tonight I might try the regular allegra.
