TTC after 35

Confused by FertilityFriend re: O day

My cycle chart this month has gone pretty well I think. I started temping with the BBT after my period ended, I am familiar with my CM pattern now, and we also started used OPKs this month. Our run of BDing seemed well aligned based on the CM and OPKs, and I felt the physical signs of ovulation in the same pattern as the past two cycles.

However - FertiltyFriend feels I O'd a few days earlier than I would agree with and it did so solely (it seems) on a .2ish rise in temperature. I'm attaching my chart here for you to look at - I think I O'd the 29th and FF thinks it was the 26th. I realize my temps are a little rocky until the 23rd but I was traveling oversees, wasn't getting consistent sleep and wasn't waking up at the same time until the 22nd.  I also know its hard without comparison since its the first month I'm temping.  However it seems to me that there was a much greater temp spike on the 30th which corresponds exactly to my physical data for the 29th (dry/no CM, bloated, feeling really overheated, crampy, straight-up evil personality).  If I look at FF's choice, why would I get a positive OPK both morning and evening on the 27th, as well as not dry up until the 28th??

Overall how accurate do you all feel FF is versus your own instinct? Does such a small rise in temp like .2 really indicate O? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! :)

Re: Confused by FertilityFriend re: O day

  • The chart is hard to see, you can link directly to your chart in FF...like I do.

However FF looks at symptoms and temps over baseline for 3 days before deciding on O. however if your temp on the days leading into your O were off due to inconstitancy then it very well could be off.

I would suggest keep in mind both possible O dates as you head into TWW, if you get a bfp eh who cares :) , if you get AF based on a later O date, then you can manually override FF.

The longer you temp the better FF can analyze....I apologize for bad spelling its early :)

Thanks HeathernSteven - how do you link the one chart via FF?  The uploaded chart .jpg opens larger when I click on it from my computer, but maybe I didn't do something correctly for other people to see it large?

  • in FF go to Sharing then under "Charting home page", in there is "view" click view at the top pf page and it will bring you to a page full of links, I believe I am using the bbcode code for TB.

Then copy and paste into your siggy, as with most changes to your siggy you will probably have to do it 10x ;)

  • Hi!

Every woman's cycle is different, and I am not a doctor. However, that being said, I have been charting for years. From the look of your cycle, I would agree with FF. It is possible to O on the same day you get your first OPK +. It's not as common, but it's normal for me. Your temp went up, and it didn't do anything other than rise from there, so I think it looks good.

If you feel strongly that you O'd on a different day, you have a couple of options. The first is to adjust your how Fertility Friend determines your ovulations (by temp, by OPK only, etc.); the other option is to override the software and mark your own determination of when you O'd. To do either, go down to Ovulation Detector and click on Tuning/Override.

I had a similar experience this month. I over-rode FF's O date to what I thought it was. A few days later, when I'd had more temps, I readjusted the method to detect O, and she indicated O was the same day I over-rode to (if that makes sense); so, my instinct was right on!

Go with what you feel is right based on your signs, temps, tests, etc. I think FF is generally pretty accurate, but there have been a few cycles where I wasn't too sure.

    Good luck!

  • I'm no FF expert, but in my charts, FF will show O as a couple of days before the temp shift, and it seems to me to be an earlier O day than I would have thought. Looking at your chart, my guess is that FF is using the larger temp shift a day or two (too small to see for sure) after the one you mentioned.

FF will also update your O day later in the month if it finds a better temp shift. And my temps jump a lot more than .2 when they jump.... it's usually just shy of a full degree in one day.

IMO, FF is a good help, but it's not perfect. GL!

  • Thanks ladies! :) I guess I'm nervous because we timed the BDing around the OPKs this month using CM as our anticipatory guide, so to speak. So if O day was the 26th we didn't start until that morning and thus our timing could have been better. Argh. Poor hubby gets the performance anxiety so he wanted to try less days with more concentration this month during FW. I thought we did well till FF threw up the 26th out if nowhere.

So how come I still got a strong positive on the 27th? Both morning and night too? I guess you can test pos after O?

  • If you O'd later on the 26 or even 27 th my re said better to bd before and have little guys waiting on the egg it can take hrs for them to get there and the egg don't wait very long:-) ...so try to relax...fx for you!
