January 2014 Moms

Ended up in ER with 2nd placenta.

Just wanted to share my story in case it happens to anyone else.
My waters broke 12 days early & I had a pitocin induced labor that lasted 22 hrs.
Baby was put on my chest to breast feed but my nipples were inverted/flat. Baby couldn't latch on. Several hours later LC helped me with a nipple shield. But I've a very sleepy baby which made feeding time a battle.
We had to give her formula supplements in the hosp to avoid dehydration.
When I got home feeding was more of a battle and my colostrum started to dwindle. I hired a hosp grade pump but had little effect.
After 7 days of no milk I went to my dr. She did an ultrasound and thought she saw something still in my uterus but wasn't sure what. Possibly fibroids or placenta.
Gave me prescription for cytrotec which was to give me contractions to excrete what ever was left in there.
Within minutes I got the shakes real bad & started losing clots of blood. After 2 hrs I headed to ER as was worried for all the blood I was losing.
After another u/s they discovered I had a second placenta in there & needed an emergency D&C. I'm home now & doing much better.
It could have been a lot worse but just keep an eye on yourselves if your milk doesn't come in on time.
Trust your gut & get to the drs.
Sorry for long post. On mobile so don't know how to give u cake. Here's a pic of my wee girl who made all that bs worthwhile.

  • How scary! I'm glad you're ok now. My milk has barely come in and I have considered retained placental fragments.

  • Wow, that must have been so scary for you. I'm glad that you trusted your instincts and got it all taken care of. I hope that feeding continues to work better for you now!

  • I also have never heard of a second placenta before. Do they have any idea why you had 2? And how did they not notice something like that before?

Glad to hear you're ok now.

  • Woah!  That's scary!  Glad everything worked out.  If you really want to BF, keep trying to get your milk to come in if you can! It's not too late.

@ehepner, I think the whole point of the story was that the retained placenta was causing the BF issues. Basically, her body was still acting like she was pregnant.
  • That's so scary! Glad you're ok!!!!
  • You're sure it was a second placenta and not just retained? I have never heard of such a thing. I will have to do some reading. Sounds scary And I'm happy it is solved.

@MindyBadger1, I was wondering the same thing. And then panicking a little bit because I had a vanishing twin and never passed any tissue. I didn't see much in a quick Google search, so I kind of assumed that it was just retained.

  • Thanks for letting us know and I'm glad you're ok!
  • Well the dr said it was a second placenta. Some fancy name for it that I can't remember. He's the one that delivered her too so he could be covering his arse and blaming a second placenta instead of retained. He did say original placenta came out whole. Again who can prove it? I'm just glad the ordeal is over.
I was too weak to pump last night but I'm going to try today to see what happens. Can't feed LO yet tho as I'm on antibiotics still.
Thanks for all your well wishes :)
  • @peanutmuse a month in ob/gyn definiTely doesn't make me an expert, but that topic definitely never came up in classroom or rotation. All my books are at work. ;) So I'm googling too.

OP retained placenta is scary as heck, not trying to downplay your situation. Just curious.

  • Wow glad to hear that you are doing better now and thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure the odds are very rare for that to happen, but still not a bad idea to watch for symptoms.
  • So sorry you went through that. Congratulations on your daughter, though. She's adorable!
