To Smell or Not to Smell?

So I was reading research that says babies can recognize their mother's smell and that if you sleep with an item for a few nights your smell rubs off on it.  I'm returning to work in about a week (freaking out) and I'm toying with the idea of sleeping with burp cloths in my bed so that my smell wares off on them.  Do you think this would help my caretakers because it would help soothe her, or just make my baby want me more?  Has anyone else had this desperate and hair brained idea like me?

Re: To Smell or Not to Smell?

  • Yeah we sent a tshirt or something to daycare. I don't really know if it helped. LOL.

  • I slept with her DC blanket for a few days. I don't know if it helped her but it made me feel better.

  • I wore a t-shirt to bed and then had my mom drape it over her chest to try to get DD to take bottles.  I kind of thought it helped, but then the nanny got her to take bottles right off the bat without the shirt.  I'm sure it can't hurt, though.  I don't think it will make LO miss you, that's beyond the cognitive level of tiny babies.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • When I was struggling to get her to sleep in the crib, I slept with her crib sheet the night before. I don't know if that is what helped (because I sleep close enough that she can smell me), but she slept in it. Thank you for the reminder.. I think I will sleep with one of her blankets before going back to work Tuesday.

  • It can't hurt, right? If anything it will help ease your mind.
