Hoppin' John, anyone else?

I've got black-eyed peas, tomato gravy, rice, and cornbread cooking right now. Yum!

Anyone else eat Hoppin' John or have a certain dish they eat on New Years Day?

  • Not here. I had a lean pocket today.... :) My family in Georgia does a similar meal every New Years though. Yum!

  • Pork and sauerkraut. It's good luck. :)

  • My mom usually does black-eye peas, greens, cornbread and... Ham, maybe? But none this year. I even went over to her house expecting some portion of good luck, but it's just 2013 leftovers from the fridge for this girl.

  • We always do tacos! Heading to the store in a bit to get the supplies!
  • Pork and sauerkraut. It's good luck. :)
Haha my family always did this, too :)  I kind of saw it as bad luck because I went vegetarian at a young age and always hated sauerkraut, so this tradition just made the house stink!

  • Yep! We eat Hoppin' John every year!

  • Same here - pork and sauerkraut! I'm from Northeast Ohio and never realized until we lived in Florida for 7 years that this was only a northern traditional. I'm glad to be back home and may go back for seconds in a bit!

  • Wow I have never heard of either of those! The South really does have more fun.

My mom usually just made a ham, or a turkey or something haha

  • I've recently started having black eye peas for New Years. Delicious!
  • We had sausage and saurkraut, mashed taters, crescent rolls - and have for many many years.

  • I always make kielbasa and sauerkraut! This year I also make chicken and dumplings! I'm from NY but live in SC, and most people here have black-eyes peas and collard greens. One is for luck/wealth and the other is for health, I think.

  • We do pork and sauerkraut AND black eyed peas. I'm from MD and my husband is from Texas so the pork and sauerkraut is my tradition (which DH has adopted and loves even more than me) and the black eyed peas is his (which I'm learning to like).

I did black eyed peas with like celery, bell pepper, onion, garlic, Cajun seasoning and some ham....is that this "Hoppin john"?

The pea mixture you made served over rice is Hoppin john. This is the recipe I've used several times. This year I put the meaty bone from the Christmas spiral cut ham in instead of buying ham hocks, and I used saved bacon grease for oil. Best version I've made!

  • @haleighkay90 I didn't realize it was a tradition to eat anything specific on New Years Day until I married my H who is from FL. :)

  • Happy New Year everyone!  I made lentils and sausage stew yesterday.  Lentils are supposed to give good luck for the New Year! :)
