Infertility

Intro

Hi ladies!  I am new to the board, but have been reading posts for a couple of weeks, building up courage to introduce myself, learning the acronyms, discussion etiquette, etc.  :)

We have been TTC since April 2013, after a vasectomy reversal in March.  SA in August and December showed low count and motility.  Consulted RE in December, who immediately wanted to start preliminary IF testing on both of us.  MF was confirmed for DH and all my tests were normal.  RE believes that the reversal surgery has caused scarring and any improvement from now onwards will be minimal.  I do have a strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer, and RE suspects BRCA mutation although no one in my family has been tested to confirm this yet.  DH's family also has a history of Down's syndrome.  RE suggests moving to directly to IVF/ICSI with PGS.  Completed all additional tests in December (HSG, trial transfer, blood work, probably some others?) and just waiting for our IVF education session in mid-January.  It looks like we are going to have some insurance coverage, so we are very fortunate.

We've been fairly private about our journey TTC so far.  Our parents are aware that we've discussed IVF as an option, but that's about it.  We have so many friends that have been announcing their BFPs recently, that I've really struggled to keep up my social life.  And I detest Facebook.  We've relied mostly on each other for support, but I'm starting to realize there are going to be things that I will go through in this process that not even DH will understand.  (He also has 2 children from a previous marriage.)  I've tried confiding in one of my close friends, but keep finding that I just can't get the words out.

As a newbie, I hope I'm approaching this the right way.  We think we will start the IVF process in February.  I think I saw a board earlier for potential February cyclers?  Also curious if anyone else has had a similar experience with a vasectomy reversal.  Were you referred directly to IVF?  It was almost 14 years between vasectomy and reversal for DH, so we knew this might eventually happen.

  • Thanks everyone.  Yes, first mammogram scheduled for Jan 18th.  I'm a little nervous.  My mom was diagnosed at 42, so the doctors want to start screening now anyway.  Our insurance doesn't cover any genetic testing for myself or PGS, so still we are still trying to decide what to do.  I would like to be tested eventually for the benefit of the rest of my family, but for now I think we'll just look into PGS.  I know there's a difference between PGS and PGD, but I'm not sure yet which would apply in our situation.
