Cloth Diapering

question: gmd

Ladies, my 6 month old has outgrown the mf inserts. I change him about every 2 hours and i double the mf up and he soaks them. I'm looking into trying out prefolds, using them for inserts and actual diapers. I've been looking into the gmd dipes. I want to know what your experience is with unbleached and bleached prefolds? Is there a difference between the two for absorbency?

I'm also looking into the workhorse dipes. I'm leaning to purchase no snaps, just so i could get a better fit. What's experience with the workhorse? Are they with it?

I have a few prefolds that i use a snappi with, and i love them, however my little guy rolls during changes so would a workhorse be better?

I'm new to using prefolds so any info you want to share, I'd love to hear!

Re: question: gmd

  • GMD prefolds and workhorses are awesome. Because you're starting to get to the wiggly phase I think I'd recommend workhorses over prefolds. They are great quality, hold a ton, and are super easy to put on. I like the no- closure style, like PP said they are easier to get a good fit. I haven't noticed much diffrence absorbency wise on bleached vs unbleached. Just aesthetics.

While prefolds are good for stuffing pockets I don't know that I'd buy them as my exclusive insert. They are bulky. I like my bamboo inserts better for day use. They hold just as much as a prefold but are way trimmer. I do love prefolds with a snappi or tri-folded in a cover though. Maybe try a few of each and get more of what you like?

  • I had newborn workhorses with snaps for when he was just born thinking it would be easier for dad. The snaps annoyed me and I just ended up snappi-ing them anyway because it was quicker.

I love all of their prefolds though. I think with the unbleached you may need an extra wash to prep. Otherwise they work the same and only the color is different. Workhorses are probably faster on a wiggly baby, but I like both.

  • I have some unbleached snapless NB workhorses, and DH and I both love them!  they're super easy to snappi, and seem very absorbent (but DD is not a super wetter, she's soaked a prefold, but hasn't filled a workhorse yet.)
  • I've used GMD bleached and unbleached prefolds and haven't found much of a difference in function. Both are fine.

For pocket stuffing, though, have you considered getting flats? They would be trimmer and more versatile than a prefold.

  • I love my GMD workhorses. I have the organic (unbleached) and they definitely take some prepping. I have both the snapped versions and snapless- the snapped seem to have a lower rise but the snapless I get a more custom fit, and I find with a wiggly baby using a Snappi is way faster than messing with snaps. Their prefolds are good too, but I like to rave about my Blueberry bamboo prefolds. They're SO soft and super absorbent.
  • Thanks girls. I'm def. Going to order them!!

  • If your LO is a heavy wetter (as it sounds like) the workhorses might not be the best option for you.  My DS is a heavy wetter and we use GMD prefolds.  We used the workhorse dipes for a while and I had to change him at least every hour.  The prefolds are awesome and we have never had a leak.  The workhorse diapers are less absorbent than a prefold (there are less layers).  But I suppose you could put a trifolded prefold or flat in there for extra absorption.  They do go on very fast and I prefer snapless.
