Birth Control

BotB may not be exactly where I should ask this but I thought the ladies here might be really knowledgeable about this topic. I'm currently on the pill and I've been for about 3-4 years (can't remember the age I started). I'm interested in getting off a hormonal method of birth control just because I'm normally a "natural" girl and don't like a lot of pills and medications and would prefer to just let my body do it's own thing. However, I've done a little bit of research and the non-hormonal ones don't have as high as a success rate as I'd like (now I know like 94 or 91% isn't bad but it isn't the 99% of the pill so I worry). Where there any methods that you guys used that you really liked/thought was easy/worked well for you?

Re: Birth Control

  • I switched to more of NFP, and used condoms when I was anywhere close to my FW. I have heard the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility has good info on this. I didn't honestly do much research, we just tried to be careful, but if we had gotten pregnant it would have been fine. My DH also understood the risks and was 100% on board with this plan.

Can I get that if I haven't had kids yet? I've heard someone tell me you have to have at least one kid for them to let you get it.
  • I've heard mixed reviews. Call your OB/PCP and see what they recommend.

  • Condoms?
No, that's not really our preference. I got on the pill to begin with so we could stop using condoms. I'm interested in hearing about methods that you don't hear about too often, e.g. sponge, cervical cap, all that junk lol.
  • You can get an IUD (Paraguard is the copper/non-hormonal one) if you haven't had children, some OB/Gyns just don't like putting them in because they can be a bit harder to get situated correctly. Had I known that was an option when I was younger, it absolutely would have been my pick. Hormonal BC was awful for me.

We did NFP for a few months after our wedding but TBH I can't tell you if I would recommend it for contraception or not - I'm infertile so TTA was pretty much a waste of time for us, lol.
