My child must be big...

I had to run into the store last night and this woman asked if B was three.  WTH?  I'm raising a Gigantor apparently.  To make matters worse, when I told her he's 18 months, she asked what I'm feeding him.  Um, lady, I'm 5'9", my husband is just under 6'3".  Our kid doesn't stand much of a chance of being small.  I almost told her he eats a healthier diet than her based off the junk she put on the belt and the carrots he was holding, but I bit my tongue.  How do people not realize the things they say can set a mom off?

Anybody else want to smack somebody lately?

  • I get the opposite comments. People are amazed at how well he walks, I'm like well, he better be, he's a year and a half. People expect that he is a year or less.

People are frequently surprised at how young Henry is, it doesn't bother me because 1- he is HUGE for his age, and 2-most people (including me) don't actually have a good idea of what the average size of a 18 mo, 2yo, or 3yo is.

That being said, I'm not quite sure why she doubled down by asking what you feed him (unless she meant it as a joke?)
That's what I think too, especially since so many of us get the same comments.  I thought 2 year olds were smaller than even B is now, so I can understand thinking he's older.  I know she probably didn't mean anything by her statement, but it was still annoying.  Stupid lady.

  • I always get that Karsyn is so small and questions if I am feeding her. I want to say, "NO, I starve my child", but I don't. I just smile and say she eats all the time!

  • I also get the opposite comments. A is tiny. People usually guess she's around 9 months. It's annoying because she eats healthy food 99% of the time. She weighed 20.6lbs and is 30.5 in as of last week.

  • I think a lot of people don't know what the right size is for a kid (at any age).  Even if they were parents themselves, they forget.

I get comments that DD is huge sometimes too but she's actually not that big at all.

  • We do a lot of toddler play groups and people are constantly assuming that Olivia is 2. She's always in the 99th percentile for height so I get it. We had some awkward comments over the summer before Olivia started walking because people assumed she was 1.5 or 2 and still crawling.

  • Most people seem to know K is younger than 2, but almost everyone comments on his size! I think it's surprising to people when I have him without Jason because I'm pretty short and I think I make K look even bigger sometimes. I had a lady ask me just yesterday in Target "Is she yours (Yes, she)?" And when I told her yes, HE is, she said "he's too big to be yours!" I really didn't take it that badly though, even the she part, because she was really nice and apologetic. I do get annoyed by how often I have to hear how big he is though. I like to think if him as my tiny baby, not the whopping toddler he has become!!
