I truthfully try not to judge people on their choices because everyone is brought up differently and has different beliefs. But sometimes when they make a choice that obviously has so much research against it, I'm compelled to side-eye. I was at work awhile ago and a very obviously pregnant woman was walking next to me to the parking lot. She asks me if I smoke, I assume because she wants to move away so she won't be around it, and I say no. She then proceeds to pull one out and light up. I've had another person tell me completely confidently and straight-faced "of course I smoked through my whole pregnancy, it's way too hard to quit, and as you can see my daughter's fine". I just can't believe people can say and do these things and not feel guilty, worried, or embarrassed.

Me: 31 DH: 29
DX (me): Inborn error of metabolism - protein restriction, metabolic formula & weekly blood tests
DNA Results (7/1): DH is NOT a carrier for my genetic disorder!
7/3: Metabolic clinic gave the green light to TTC - holy crap!
Also a woman who smoked her whole pregnancy and bragged about beating the odds. Her daughter is 22 now and has a lot of issues because of poor brain development in the womb. Keep on bragging lady.

I was going to type something similar (maybe less blunt) and couldn't quite formulate my idea into words.
Smoking is bad for your health. It's bad for a growing fetus' health. Everyone knows that.
It's just a little high-horsey to abandon a friendship becuase you don't like how she was TTCing.

Here is a study from Potsdam. https://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/FetalAlcoholSyndrome.html#.UsMKlJg9BsM
A large study examined 400,000 women in the U.S., all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week. 3
A review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day. 4
"One drink can hurt your foetus," a mass media campaign in the province of Quebec, was dropped after a number of women who had consumed a single drink while pregnant, often before realizing they were expectant, began demanding abortions.
Source: Dr. Hubert Sacy, presentation at the Gode Alkoholdninger meetings, Kobenhavn, Denmark, April, 2001.
A study of moderate drinking during pregnancy found no negative effects. The researchers suggested that one drink per day provides a significant margin of safety, although they did not encourage drinking during pregnancy. 5
A study of pregnancies in eight European countries found that consuming no more than one drink per day did not appear to have any effect on fetal growth. A follow-up of children at 18 months of age found that those from women who drank during pregnancy, even two drinks per day, scored higher in several areas of development. 6
An analysis of seven major medical research studies involving over 130,000 pregnancies suggests that consuming two to 14 drinks per week does not increase the risk of giving birth to a child with either malformations or fetal alcohol syndrome. 7
TTC Since August 2013
As for the topic, I was talking to some one about the same thing once and she told me about a girl who drank with every pregnancy. On her second one, she was at the bar throwing them back when someone gave her the side eye. She glared and said "don't judge me, you have no idea what I have been through." That is absolutely no excuse. Your issues in life do not mean your get to punish your child for life.
You should have to pass a test to have a baby. Seriously
