Suspicious shadow 20 week scan :(

Hi all
I don't write much I'm more of a reader and listener but I really need some support right now - we had our 20 week scan the other day and it brought up a shadow on my babies lip and the technician thinks it's a suspected cleft lip- as you can imagine we were shocked, upset, angry- every emotion going because as much as you think your prepared for the worst your not. Anyway we have our specialist scan tomorrow at 10 am and even tho I've had time to come to terms with it and realise it could have been a lot worse I guess I'm just kind of hoping that it's all nothing and the scan machine was playing up that day. Has anyone had anything like this before? Had a baby with a cleft? Or can they be wrong? Im 29 and it's out first little miracle - I also did everything by the book so guess it's just gods way of testing us thank you xx

Re: Suspicious shadow 20 week scan :(

  • Hopefully they will get a better look tomorrow. As its not ideal/ what you were expecting, cleft pallets are pretty common and fixable with surgery. Keep in mind baby is still healthy. Keep us updated.

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I don't have much to offer having never lived through this. Medicine has come a long way and you will know more when you speak to the specialist we will keep you in our prayers tonight though.

  • A friend of mine had two babies, both with cleft lip/palate. While there can be some variations in the defect and how it affects each baby, it is very treatable and both her kids have had corrective surgeries with great success. I think it can cause some dental issues later, again each one is different but it is still very treatable.

I hope your follow-up scan reveals that everything is great!

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I'm sorry to hear this... but wait until you see the specialist before you do anything else.  The sono tech could be completely wrong, or it could have been an uncooperative baby that day.  Kee us posted.

  • Hopefully it's just a shadow! It's a hundred year old technology so it's not perfect. Hope you get the info you need from the specialist. <3
  • I will keep you in my prayers! Hopefully it will turn out to be nothing!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I don't have any experience with your particular situation, but I also had a not so great A/S and was a total mess after. As my experience as a nurse and spent a short time in Pediatrics, we always showed before and after pictures to women expecting a baby with a cleft palate/lip. You will be amazed how they can fix them with minimal scarring. Maybe wait until you know for sure, but it may help to know it is completely fixable. Good luck
  • I'm sorry you are going thru this. I am a pediatric nurse and I have seen some really outstanding and beautiful cleft lip and palate repairs. Modern medicine is incredible. I will be thinking of you and your little one tomorrow. Keep us updated.

  • I have a friend who was born with cleft lip and palete, and she has such minimal scarring that you would almost never know if she didn't share. I know you are hoping that it is nothing but the machine acting up, but know that there are great support systems out there in place to help you and your husband should you need them.

  • One of my best friends had a daughter with cleft lip and palate. She had surgery and now it's barely noticeable.

  • Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully it is nothing. We had a friend whose son was born with just the cleft palate. He had some feeding issues at the start but at one year had the surgery and never had another complication. Keep us posted!
  • So sorry to hear that you're going through this. Although I don't know exactly how you feel, we were told at 18 weeks that our miracle could have DS. After steadfast prayer, bloodwork results came back normal, but the wait was still so scary. A close family friend of ours recently gave birth to a gorgeous little boy with a cleft lip. He latched perfectly right after birth and is gaining weight like a champ. He's scheduled to have surgery soon with one of the most specialized plastic surgeons - mom and dad were told that he will have a very tiny scar...minimal damage. Modern medicine is amazing. Prayers for you and your miracle - I know how hard waiting for results can be! Hang in there, momma :):)
  • I had the same issue last pregnancy and it was a shadow from the cord....hope you get the same news! If not, it will be okay, take it one day at a time.
  • Fx you get a beautiful scan tomorrow!! I've had several kiddos with cleft palate on my caseload working with kiddos with special needs. (I don't typically see them because of their cleft palate) Some kiddos do have some feeding issues, as stated before, but it just means that you have to support them a little more, and there are people to help work through that. Occasionally, there will be some articulation (speech) issues, but that is also easily repaired. They have made fabulous progress with surgeries and make their scars barely noticeable now!

  • Personal if i was in ur shoes id book to have a 4d scan so u can see his avtual face. Its easier enough to say try not to worry but try not to. It was most likely the machine or jus how your babys head was positioned at the time.
  • So sorry! Hopefully it is nothing, bu like others have said, it is thankfully something that is now easily correctable on most cases. DH and I are considering adopting a baby girl from China for our next baby, and I am open to adopting one with a cleft lip because the wait is not as long and it's usually so easy to correct.

Hoping for the best for you and your sweet baby! ((Hugs))

  • I'm sorry to hear about this, but hopefully it will turn out to be nothing. At our 18 wk scan they saw to fluid sacs in our little boys brain. We r not worrying yet. They can clear up in time. Try and stay positive and keep ur head up.
