Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Projectile vomit

My son was born at 32 weeks. He spent 2 weeks in the nicu. He is almost 3 months but only 5 weeks or so adjusted age. He also has a milk protein and corn allergy. He is on Similac Alimentum. He has GERD and is on Omeprazole once a day and sometimes Zantac at nigh depending how bad his reflux bothers him during the day. He projectile vomits once every two weeks and sometimes as often as once a week. His GI specialist has no concern over it because he is still gaining weight really good! I guess I'm just wanting reassurance from other moms to ease my mind a little more! I'm a FTM and this has just been a really long bumpy road for me and my LO! Thanks!

Re: Projectile vomit

  • I'd be okay with once a week or two. Our LO is on Alimentum as well, and Prevacid for reflux. He was projectiling 2-4 times a day and gaining very very slowly. We realized he might be lactose intolerant since prevacid has lactose in it and once we stopped using it (we ran out and couldn't get a refill for 2 days), he stopped projectiling so much.

He has still vomitted three times in the last two weeks, but it's way less than it was.

Anyways, trust your gut and push if you want to get a second opinion, but once a week or two seems ok, especially since he's gaining.

  • Since it's infrequent, I see no cause for concern.

DS is on Neocate and Zantac. He also has projectile vomit once or twice a week. Our pedi has assured us it's fine since he's gaining well and stated they'd only look into it further if it occurred after each time he ate.

If he doesn't seem uncomfortable and his symptoms are generally well-controlled with the omeprazole and Zantac I wouldn't worry.

  • My four year old DS1 would projectile vomit about once a day. My ped had us put cereal in his bottle. It helped some, but he would still do it occasionally. He has always been in the 50th percentile or higher and was a pretty chubby baby. All those extra calories, I'm sure.

When he started solids, I had to make all of his. Just about all jarred baby food is mixed with apple juice, and that was one of his triggers. He would projectile vomit with that, too. He's a perfectly healthy four year old. We were able to stop reflux meds around one year. Good luck! And always take two changes of clothes with you (for him and you!).

  • As long as he's gaining weight ok, vomiting infrequently is (generally) a laundry problem and not a health problem. My pedi assured us that lots of babies are born with immature digestive systems that just like to spit up a lot. I assume you already burp LO frequently during feedings, keep him upright for 20 min after a feeding, etc? Just doing those things has decreased the amount of vomit around here quite a bit.

  • To add to this I was going to start my own discussion but felt repetitive... My daughter has now at 6 weeks has started projectile vomiting at almost the same time every morning. It's not anything I've eaten or drank either. She's not upset when it happens. Any thoughts?

Have you found any other connection other than the morning?

How long since she LAST ate something, does she vomit? Like did she eat at 1 am, and vomits at 8 am?

Nope just this time frame in the morning. Sometimes it's right as I'm burping her. Sometimes it's between the two morning feedings. It's after 8ish feeding. And that's her second feeding of the day. She eats anytime after 5 or so.

And I pump as much as I can after the 5/6ish feeding. So it's "fresh" milk persay at that next feeding. And i haven't done anything different in weeks. Just randomly the last 3 days. And no other time in the day does she do it.

  • my son is now 7 weeks and for about 3 or 4 of them he projectile vomited after almost every time he ate. as long as the baby is gaining weight dont worry about it. he hasnt vomited for about a week now. it should slowly go away depending on how slow or fast the formula adjustment is.
