~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. How did Christmas go for you, foodwise?

3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

  • Hi I'm not sure I introed or not.. I have a 12 week old and have been No dairy including hidden dairy for about a month (except Xmas) we had to try because I literally couldn't eat anything. He did not handle it well so back to no dairy and 3 terrible days and he is back to his happy self.

I am struggling but losing weight. I eat avocado a lot to keep fat and calories up lots if protein and whole grain bread but it sucks! I'm struggling to think of dinners to make and go back to work Thursday so need to figure out lunches too.

Burning question.. Can we have goat cheese??

Some babies are ok with goat cheese, some are not.

Have you checked out mspimama.com? She has lots of good, easy MSPI-friendly recipes. In addition to avocado, I eat lots of nuts and nut butters, and drizzle olive oil on everything, to get plenty of healthy fats. Lots of fruits and veggies, beans (hummus with veggies, black bean dip with MSPI-friendly tortilla chips are easy snacks), Larabars/Kit's Organic bars... Lunches for me are usually leftover dinner.

    HTH and GL!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Fine and fine. I upped the zyrtec dose and his face does seem to be clearing up.

    2. How did Christmas go for you, foodwise? Good! I actually had too many treats I think, haha. I was able to eat some dairy, eggs, and wheat with no ill effects to DS. I strictly avoided soy, though. We went out to eat Christmas Eve and the restuarant does not use any soy products! I have never come across a place like that, it was kind of amazing.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Just that I have been eating some dairy, but I don't enjoy it nearly as much as I used to. I feel better eating goat cheese than cow cheese now, and don't really like drinking milk... I'm still buying rice milk and making almond milk! It's crazy how much my diet and tastes have changed.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

I'm doing alright, although I've been struggling with keeping my kitchen stocked with things that are okay for me to eat, and I'm starting to get aggravated with DH, who has zero interest in going dairy-free with me (or even reducing his intake).

DS is doing well. His rashy skin is finally clearing up, and he seems to get happier by the day. The only real symptom still hanging on is his poop... It's still always a shade of green (starts out really dark in the morning, and is celery-colored by nighttime) and mucousy.

    2. How did Christmas go for you, foodwise?

Christmas was HARD. My entire family is very food-centric for every holiday, so at every single get-together (we had five of them, between DH's family and mine), I was surrounded by awesome food that I couldn't eat. I thought I was going to be safe at my mom's house yesterday(she has many, many food sensitivities as well), and then my stepdad put butter on everything... And didn't tell anyone. So, I ate a ton of vegetables (squash, potatoes, green beans) thinking they were safe, and then someone mentioned how good the squash was, which was when he mentioned the butter. Mom was mad, I was kind of freaked out, but luckily DS hasn't had any setbacks so far.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Maybe not burning, but how long should it take for LO's bowel movements to look 'normal' again? He doesn't seem miserable and in pain anymore, but I still feel like I'm spending a lot of mental energy worrying about his poop.

  • @lovelainie I'm sorry you had a rough Christmas. :( That's so annoying about the butter! Ugh, I would've been so upset. I'm glad your DS is doing ok.

Re: poop, that was the one lingering thing about my DS too. It didn't go back to normal until I finally cut out wheat (on top of dairy, soy, eggs, and peanuts) at 7 mo old. So for us, it was a sign that something was still in my diet that wasn't agreeing with him. I know some other mama's say 3-5 weeks for poop to look normal once the right diet changes have been made. But, since you were inadvertently contaminated with butter last week, I wouldn't cut anything else out until a few weeks from now. HTH!

  • 1. Hello all! DS and I are both doing pretty well.

    2. Christmas went alright. I was surrounded by cheese. It was really difficult at times to not just reach for a piece of cheese or some dip, just out of habit. Also I would never accuse my family of being terribly sensitive. I got made fun of a lot by aunts and uncles eating their MF'ing dairy-full desserts and it really pissed me off a couple of times. At some point I ate something that had dairy in it, bc by Saturday evening there was blood in his diaper again, although he wasn't ever fussy like he used to be. It cleared up by Sunday afternoon. It must have been something I ate at a restaurant. Ugh.

    3. No questions right now. But my LO's poos are often some shade of green. I didn't think that was necessarily problematic?

I am so sick of traveling... We are 4 driving hrs away from home if we don't run smack into rush hour in Nashville. Ugh.

  • @JarynA I have been annoyed at DH several times for not being sensitive enough to my MSPI-related trials (everyone else has been pretty great about it), but he has never outright made fun of me! Geez...

It is so hard being on the road and eating out while on this diet. I'm sure you're looking forward to being back in your self-controlled bubble... I know I was happy to get back to mine! :)

RE: the green poo, I think if there are no other symptoms, like mucous or blood, it can be a "normal" thing. I know my DS's green poop didn't show up until his other MSPI symptoms did, and didn't entirely go away until I had cut all the offending foods from my diet.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? I am still in pain from a UTI that started over a week ago. I'm not allowed to take pyridium to help it while BFing. DS is not drinking enough so I'm worried about him. I am actively watching for signs of dehydration. He only nurses 3x a day now and that can't possibly be enough liquid. He has been refusing every other liquid :(

    2. How did Christmas go for you, foodwise? The meal was great - my mom made safe foods for DS and me. Dessert was hard though. I almost caved and ate a piece of Hershey pie. It looked soooo good. However I didn't cave.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? DS turns two this week, I can't believe I have been dairy free for 22 months!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Doing good, both of us.

    2. How did Christmas go for you, foodwise? We went a non-traditional route and had T-bone steaks, baked potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, veggies, and salads for Christmas dinner.  Dh did most of the meal cooking, which is good since he supports my diet.  Did get tired of another family member telling me that treats brought to the house didn't have that much milk in them so I should eat them anyway.  But after I accidentally ate something with milk in it at work and pointed out ds's reaction to it, the comments at home stopped.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Can't think of any at the moment.
