jogging stroller questions...

I tried to get a Jog in on the treadmill. I made it 8 minutes before Jo woke up. She likes to know what I am doing all the time.

At what point can I consider a jogging stroller? I was going to deal with this in the spring when it is nicer out, but I need to run before then. I may have a place that I can use one indoors.

Anything I need to look for or watch out for when considering a jogging stroller?
Better yet, dh gets placed for work finally and he can be home more. Holding my breath on that option.

Re: jogging stroller questions...

  • A friend of mine jogs, she has a 2 year old and a 2 month old. She swears by a BOB. That is all I know, gl

  • We have a graco fast action jogger click connect. Jeez that's wordy. I don't run though ha ha ha. It's very smooth, so I bet it would be good for jogging.

  • I think they say 5-6 months before baby should go in jogger. Once they have really good head control without assistance!

I have the bob revolution and love it!! I like the lock/unlock front wheel option! It rides so smooth for LO and pushes so easily! I am planning on spending some of our tax return on a double!

  • What is considered really good head control? I may have to ask our pediatrician since she has even commented on Jo's head control. When I hold her I just have an arm under her butt, she turns her head back and forth to look at everything. Only times I really need to support her is if she falls asleep in awkward position in a carrier (she sleeps like me, the more awkward the better it seems).

  • I was looking at those. Does the book say when you can use it for jogging? I will see if Google can help me out.

  • I've been looking at them too. So far I like the graco the best. Of course other ones are more appealing, but the wheels are soooo small, and with only having one wheel up front, they can fall over quite easily. Ugh!

I would feel terrible if I took a sharp turn, and the stroller fell over. I don't know, still doing research.

  • Since I plan to use it on a gym floor I wouldn't be too worried about bumps and jolts for awhile.... So I am not crazy for considering using it early?

Yeah, I think they say 6 months before jogging with a baby. It feels kind of impossible to work out when the baby won't let you and you're too tired after the baby's bedtime.

I'm confused by the head control thing, because at this age they're still too little to go in a jogger without an infant seat, so I'm not sure what the difference is between them being in the car and being in the jogger (as far as them needing to have head control).

I'm getting a BOB because my running mom-buddies all swear by them and they hold up to 70 lbs. so I think I can get a lot of use out of it. I know a lot of them started taking their babies out jogging well before it's recommended, but I haven't asked my pedi about it yet. It seems like they'd be fine in the infant seat, but I may be missing something.

I'm just guessing here, but I would think that the ride would be much smoother in a car. In a stroller, you're more likely to have significant jostling of the baby when you hit bumps, rocks, whatever. I know jogging strollers are meant to have better shock absorption than a regular stroller, but it probably still doesn't compare to a car.

*Disclaimer- not a jogger, never used a jogging stroller, really just guessing.

You nailed it! I have to be in shape in the spring so I can't keep putting this off...

  • We have a Britax B-Ready stroller. It fits his carseat and then later has a stroller seat. It handles really nicely. I haven't been running with it yet, but I think it will be fine. My cousin has a City Mini and seems to like it. She said she looked at the Britax B-Ready but it's "not recommended" for faster than 5 miles an hour.....I don't run faster than 5 an hour. Not sure what would happen if you ran faster than 5 mph with it, though.

  • Definitely recommend the BOB. We have the single and double and they are great. I think the manual says 9 months. You want to make sure your baby has good head control so they aren't flopping around. If you are running on a paved running trail with little to no bumps or sharp turns then it isn't a big concern. If you are going to be on sidewalks where there may be more bumps or turns then you want to consider head control. If you are doing trails or something more rough then you definitely want to think about head control and wait until they are older.

It becomes jet powered and you won't be able to keep up ;)
  • I have a BOB, which I've been taking LO for walks in. I ran with it the other day with him in the infant seat in the BOB and just went slow watching for rocks and avoided the sidewalk because of the cracks in the concrete. His head was fine, not bumping around at all.
  • We have the BOB revolution as well with the adapter to hook the infant seat on. It is so smooth even on sidewalks and gravel paths. So far I have only been walking with her in it in her infant seat but I can't see why you couldn't jog the same way.

  • I LOVE our Bob Revolution.  Got an awesome deal on it on amazon this last fall.  It's freaking cold out where I am right now, so DH and I are taking turns running.  Once spring hits we'll put the kiddo in it and run together again :-)

I think once they are sitting up on their own but Ive seen so many different recommendations Im not sure if there is a "right" answer! After DS1 I didnt start running until he was9 months in the stroller but bc we didnt have a jogger before that....I wouldnt mind starting much earlier though if I felt he was safe with DS2!

  • We have the graco jogger. Im not a jogger I just got it more for walking on all types of terrain, and it is very good for that. I have heard its not the best if you actually plan to jog with it. Also the manual does give an age, either 6 or 9 months I believe.

  • Also, I think the reason is you wouldn't want to jog with the infant carrier in, at least I wouldn't.

Good to know! I will keep it at 4.9 mph!

  • Well I hope dh has good news then in the next few weeks so we can put off the stroller purchase. Jo just has to know what is going on all the time.

  • I have been using my Britax BReady (with the infant seat snapped in, not the stroller seat). I walk/jog on the indoor track at our gym while DH lifts and then we switch. Does the head control thing apply if they are in the infant seat?

Haven't bought a real jogger yet, would like a BOB in the spring when it's warm enough to johnoutdoors but don't want to pay full price so am going to keep my eyes peeled for one at consignment shops or the Tot Swap.

I have this stroller. I LOVE it. It's too cold to run outside here, but by the time LO gets his neck and head control in check it will be warm enough to take it outside for a spin on our bike trail. It's a fantastic stroller, and very reasonably priced.

  • I have a bob and with the car seat adapter she does great. She has good head control and I put an extra blanket around her head pillow thing in the car seat. I have been doing short runs on super smooth running paths and she barely jostles. She loves the fresh air and I love the exercise!

  • The BOB is the cats ass! I love mine!
  • @carawasa @awwwpuddin and @mangomama82 have you had any issues with the front tire on yours? Our tires were all deflated when we opened the box and the front one wouldn't hold air. Then it came off the rim! We have only taken LO out 4 times so we exchanged it for a new one this weekend. Hoping the new one will not break too - if so I'll prob cough up the money for a BOB...

@juliemay623 I wasn't sure what was wrong with it I though the alignment is off. My FI mentioned we should add air to the tire.

  • @carawasa yeah it prob needs air. my dad suggested we buy a hand pump so we could blow it up at home and not have to go to the gas station every time. But the dang thing didn't even hold air overnight! I'm going to try one more time but I may give up on this one. It's not worth it to have to pump it every time I want to use it and LO is screaming "let's go already!" Haha
  • The tires came deflated. We filled them once and it's been fine since. No issues at all

I'm also itching to run with LO. As a PP said, by the time I put her to bed, it's dark, and I don't want to run then. I have a britax stroller and car seat and have considered going slow jogging with it at the golf course--super smooth, flat paths. I haven't done it yet but am having trouble with the "wait until 6 months" advice :(

  • I was hoping some experts would come in and weigh in on the subject. Just from my short jaunt on the treadmill my metabolism boosted and I felt better. Combine it with chugging water I was able to get a good pump session in today.
