When are you making the switch?

Dh and my mom keep telling me that dd needs to start sleeping in her crib (in her room). I am not ready for it. When did/will you make the switch?

  • I would like to transition DD at 6 months but she's growing taller by the day and I'm not sure she will fit in her bassinet next to our bed, until April. So we might transition her sooner.

I'm in the same boat. DD is almost 9 weeks. I'm not ready for it either. :( she is starting to get a little big for the RnP but she's also not sleeping through the night quite yet. I'm thinking though that to transition her over we should start by putting her RnP in her room and eventually get her into the crib. We start daycare in a few weeks so I want to wait until she gets acclimated to that big change before I throw in another. I'm thinking it will probably be between the 4 and 5 month mark (if she doesn't completely outgrow the rnp before then)

  • We did it at 9 weeks.  No tears. He wakes up at 5 hours eats goes back down for 3ish hours and when he wakes up that time to eat I keep him next to me in the bassinet to sneak in another couple hours of sleep.

She is in a Pack N Play. I think the top layer can hold up to 25lbs. So I didn't think she would outgrow it.

We do bedshare after DH leaves for work in the morning.

We did it at 14 weeks at DHs insistence because he wasn't sleeping well because of her. I cried my eyes out the first night, but after the first night i was fine. The first 2 nights she got up 4 times each night and wpuld nurse back to sleep quietly. Its since been a week and she's had 3 nights now where she's only gotten up once, hoping its a habit. She got up a lot more often when sleeping 2ft from me.

She had her first sleepover at my moms last night. I was surprised how easy that was for me in comparison to moving her to her crib/bedroom.
  • when she sleeps a whole lot better... I'm too lazy to walk across the house several times a night.
  • Our pediatrician actually recommends baby in room until baby can roll belly to back consistently so around 4 months! That's what we did with DS1
  • Never! Just kidding. Kinda. He's only 2 months and the plan was to wait until 6 months. Just easier with nursing. His room is downstairs and it turns out it's chilly down there in the winter so I'll deft wait until spring to make the move.
  • I'm gonna do it at 12 weeks. I've got a noisy sleeper also, and am more than ready for him to be out of our room!

  • I just bought an arms reach co sleeper since she's too heavy for the bassinet part of the Pn. I had planned on 6 months. DD1 slept with us until7 months.

He was getting too long for the RnP and loves to be stretched out, so we just moved him to his crib one night (at about 5-6 weeks) and he's been there ever since.

When he's in his crib, he's right across the hall from our bed (actually closer to us than he is when he's in our room). He gets up once or twice to eat and goes right back down.

Plus, my husband's a snorer and he's a noisy goat baby, and between the two of them, mama wasn't getting any sleep!

  • I'm trying to wait til 6 months. I have a friend whose son died of SIDS 1 day before he was 5 months old so I'm a nervous wreck about that. I can hear him breathing when he's in our room & I have actually woken up when he's breathing too quietly & checked on him.

The only thing is that he sleeps with his arms out so he's pushing against the bassinet sides & he would probably be more comfortable in his crib. I'm torn.
  • I think I'm going to go RnP to PnP when she outgrows the RnP. I'm just not ready for her to not be in our room!

  • We did it at about 8 weeks. That was the only thing he would sleep in.

Until he STTN he's staying with us in the bassinet. Almost ten weeks old now and still waking every 3 to eat so I'd rather not be treking across the house either. We do put him down for a nap in his crib every day with a shirt of mine to get him used to it. I go back to work in three weeks so we'll see if things change.
  • I doubt that we'll wait all the way to 6 months but I'm not ready just yet. He is sleeping better now but that's a new thing so who knows if it will last. If it does maybe in a month or so when he'll be 3.5 months.

I will miss having him right next to my bed!

  • Not for awhile. I may bring her crib into our room soon though.

  • 6 months is my plan. Although we may have to wait until we move, our house is a cape and our bedroom is upstairs and his is down, so I would never put him down there alone. So he may be with us in our room for a quite awhile!

  • We started transitioning around 3 weeks and he was moved in at 4 weeks.  I was excited to, actually; should have skipped the bassinet and just let him sleep in the Moses basket for the first few weeks really.
  • We did from day one but we have movement and video monitors. She started STTN this week so it's awesome.

  • DD1 was 5 months before we started the transition. I plan to wait at least the same amount of time or more for DD2.

  • Six months is around the time we did with DS, so that should be good with DD. I like having her next to my bed for now.

  • I think we may start moving her to her own room tonight.  She has been STTN for almost two months now, but she is a really noisy sleeper and keeps me awake.

  • We transitioned at 8 weeks and I'm so glad we did.  It allowed us to really establish a bedtime routine and she's been sleeping through the night since.  At first she would sleep 8PM-4AM, eat, then go down again till 7 or so.  Now she's 8PM to 7:30-8AM.

  • Jeez, am I the only one that still only gets sleep if he's right next to me? The minute I lay him down on anything he wakes up crying! Wtf! I'm so jealous!

This is mostly us. I can get him sleeping in the crib until after his second feeding, which is typically 1-2 AM, after that he isn't having it. He will nap in the RnP for maybe 30 mins, and will scream his head off in the crib in the daytime.

  • Eh, I dont know...whenever I feel ready! We have a first floor master and the kids rooms are upstairs so its hard for me to make that move! Plus, we dont know if this is our last so I wanna hold onto this newborn phase a little longer...

On the other hand, it wasn't until we moved DS1 into his crib that he became a rockstar sleeper, so maybe it would be best?!

  • When he can roll over front to back and back to front we will transition was our plan.  We're starting to rethink some because I think I'm starting bad habits.  Once he gets up for the first feeding I have a hard time getting him back to sleep so I end up sleeping on the couch with him.  (Our couch is really firm and solid so no cushions for him to get stuck in and all that.)
  • She's starting to outgrow the RNP so probably in the next month unless I get out the PNP. She takes her naps in the crib and does okay, plus it's right across the hall, but I don't want her in there yet.

  • Ugh I wish I had a good reason but honestly dd's room is just across the hall. I just don't feel ready yet. I feel so comfortable that she's right next to me at night. I can look in her bassinet to check that she's still breathing and that she's OK. She has just about outgrown her bassinet though. She's only got a few inches above her head left. My mother keeps saying a pack and play isn't good for her bones and that I should put her in her crib where she has a great mattress. I'm not sure if she's just saying that to help persuade me to put her in her crib.

  • They recommend firm surfaces for sleeping. If you are really concerned, look into the mattress for the pack n play.

  • DD1 was a little over 4 mo when we transitioned her. I honestly thought I would have given DD2 the boot by now, but I get the feels just thinking about it. DH starts a new schedule in the middle of January so I will probably move her to her room at the same time so we can all get on a consistent schedule.

I didn't even know they sold a PNP mattress.  X_X

Can I ask another dumb question? Can a regular mattress be used in a PNP?

  • Our DS slept in a pack n' play in our bedroom until the day he was 6 weeks old and I moved him into his own room. We have an angel monitor on his crib so an alarm goes off if he stops breathing for more than 5 or 10 seconds. We also have the sound monitor in our room and we feel pretty safe with all that. He actually sleeps better in his crib as opposed to our room. And WE sleep so much better (when we're sleeping). We slept with him in the same room over Christmas as we stayed with family...I did NOT remember him being so noisy when sleeping. It was a rough night for us. I choose six weeks because my cousin still has her one year old in a pack n play in their bedroom...I wasn't about to do that.

We are not breastfeeding, so that wasn't a factor that we had to work around.

  • DS is getting too big for his RNP and I can tell it isn't as comfortable to him as it once was because he can't stretch his legs.  I've been putting him in the PNP in our room occasionally, and he does okay for a few hours if he is swaddled, but after that he doesn't want to go back to sleep in it, which leads to him staying in bed with me, which I'd rather avoid making a habit of.  We might start working on his crib soon.
