Sleeping in crib

DD has slept in her RNP since coming home from the hospital - she had really bad reflux so being flat on her back terrified me. Now she is 11wks old and I have a feeling her pedi is going to ask us to transfer her to her crib soon. I return to work in 3 weeks so this is definitely something i'd like to slowly transition her to, maybe for naps only for awhile, while i'm home and not working. I tried putting her in her crib last week for a nap and she wanted to play for a good 30min and then cried for 15min straight - I obviously couldn't take it so I put her in her RNP and she immediately fell asleep.

She is currently sleeping 8-10hrs straight at night (swaddled) and napping 30-90min stretches during the day (not swaddled) .... I really am enjoying sleeping as well so this transition does not sound like fun at all but I know it's inevitable.

Any tips?

Re: Sleeping in crib

  • Try propping her crib mattress up to help with the reflux. Our little guy won't sleep in his crib due to reflux, either, so he is in a bassinet next to our bed.
We have that mattress propped and it helps! I'm not ready to transition him to crib yet, though, because I like having him next to me. I will be having to do it soon, though.

  • My lo's first nap in the crib happened when he had fallen fast asleep elsewhere and I moved him to the crib. He stayed asleep and woke there. Then the next time was when he was extremely sleepy and I used his fave white noise to help him fall asleep, now he can go in a bit more awake and fall asleep there too. Haven't done all night yet partly because we have a houseguest staying with us and I'm not committed to it but my LO is only 5.5 weeks right now anyway. GL
  • Of course you're going to need to get LO out of the RNP soonish because of the weight limit, but your pedi can't really dictate where you are ok with your LO sleeping. :)

That being said, you can try elevating one end of the crib mattress so it is more at an incline like the RNP. Or you can put LO in a pack n'play if you have one, so that she's in a smaller space and feels more cozy.

Various sleep methods all suggest different things (nurse to sleep, nurse til drowsy but awake, don't nurse before bed, rock the baby, don't rock the baby) so you might just need to play around with stuff to see if it works. I know the only way my LO will go near his crib w/o screaming is swaddled, mobile playing, and one of us has to pat his tummy and make shushing noises until he settles. It also has to be DARK in there - no nightlights - or he thinks it's still playtime. It took us nearly two hours to get him to sleep in the crib the other night and TBH it's just not worth it to us to lose that much sleep so back in the PNP he went, lol.

  • I don't have any tips, my lo is 7 weeks 3 days and has been sleeping on me in the recliner since bringing him home. Tonight is the first night I am trying to transition him to the pnp in iur room so I wish you luck. He usually maps in the swing but I tried to have nap in the pnp to get him used to it and didn't work out so well from 9:30 am he only slept 2 timed 30 mins each before waking up to cry. I know we'll get it but I hope it doesn't take forever, I look forward to sleeping in my bed again!
