Why do my covers stink?

Lately I've noticed my PUL covers stink even right out of the wash. I've got a variety of major brands and we use prefolds with them. It is definitely the covers and not the prefolds. Any ideas to fix this?

Wash routine?

Warm prewash, hot wash with tide, cold rinse, cold extra rinse. We have a regular top loading washing machine that's about four years old. I hang dry the covers but occasionally one escapes detection and gets in the drier.

How much tide? For what size load? If they smell like pee I would guess they aren't getting clean. I wouldn't guess that PUL gets much build up, nor could you really strip it. Maybe do a bleach load?

Did you say you use tide I was going to ask what kind of soap you use?
