Caffein

How many milligrams of caffein do you consume in a day. I know the allowance is 200. I have been consuming anywhere from 35-100 milligrams on most days in the form of decaf coffee, diet colas, regular coffee or tea. I know these are not the healthiest choices but do you think I should try to stop completely? I get so board with water.... With my first pregnancy all I drank was herbal tea and stevia or Splenda sweetened beverages. No caffeine or aspartame at all. I can't find that willpower again :(

Re: Caffein

  • Nothing wrong with it! Everything in moderation. If you enjoy it, don't worry about cutting it out completely.

  • i stopped watching it. i did some reading and asked my dr. the concern is mostly in the first tri. i drink caffeine whenever i want it.
Same here, most days that entails maybe 8 oz of regular coffee in the morning.  Once in a while I'll have a 20 oz root beer or I'll drink a can's worth of Mtn. Dew.

I doubt I ever go over 200, and I thought the same about the danger being mostly in first tri - so I don't pay much attention to it anymore.

  • It's a drug. It stimulates our nervous system and baby's. So I think drinking as little as possible is ideal. I do have half a cup in the morning with this pregnancy because now I am chasing a toddler, working full time and live in a God forsaken country in which everything is 10x more difficult. I don't allow myself more than that unless it is "medicinal" (I get migraines). But with Eowyn - I cut it out completely. It was easier for me to have none than count milligrams or think about it too much.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • I personally don't drink any and only get it from chocolate, which I don't eat a lot of, so I don't even measure. Also, I stopped drinking caffeine probably about 3 months before my BFP. On a side note, to help with the drinking options, I frequently put a small amount of fruit juice in my water to give it some flavor - but then you get the calories and sugar. I do agree that caffeine in moderation is fine though

  • I trick myself to cut down. Mug root beer is caffein free and so is sprite. But ice tea.. How could I let go! I'm not sure but hubby is on my back about it big time
  • I'm at about 50-100mg a day. I couldn't survive this pregnancy with working fulltime and chasing a toddler around.

  • The only time I gave up coffee during my pregnancy was between weeks 6-8 when I had an aversion to it, and it made me gag and even the smell made me queasy.  As soon as that passed, I went back to my 2 cups daily.  Not sure what caffeine amount I have, I don't pay attention. I have a Keurig and just have two k-cups a day, so whatever is in those.
  • I have a cup or 2 a day. I wouldn't suggest chugging down a rockstar or redbull but like @KristaU831 said the concern is higher in the first tri.
  • I was big coffee drinker pre-baby -
My doctor told me to scale back, though she sees no issue w 2 (8oz) cups per day. I see it as a treat now - not a necessity. I reeeeally look forward to my coffee :)

There's no "limit" per se. A lot of doctors use the 200mg number as a standard, I believe it comes from a study regarding caffiene and early miscarriage. I just limit my intake to one or two caffeinated drinks a day. As long as I don't get shaky or have a lot on an empty stomach I'm not too worried about it.

    Edited: Horrific spelling

  • I would inject caffeine directly into my veins if I could so I say enjoy

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I drink one can of Dr. Pepper maybe every other day?

  • I allow myself a large tim hortons coffee everyday. And will occasionally have a. Diet pop here and there... Any coffee after the first cup in the morning is decaf. If I stay at home I'll have 2 Keriug cups of caribou or Starbucks medium roast and then switch to decaf. I did this with my other 2 and this one from my bfp on

  • Cup of coffe every morning, with lots of milk.   I figure that helps a little.  If I want a soda during the day, I have one and my Dr is completely okay with it.  We make decaf iced tea at home since I drink a ton every day.

  • I do not drink coffee and not much of a hot tea drinker.  Since being pregnant, I have not had any caffeinated sodas, I only drink sprite or ginger ale.  I had one glass of home made ice tea.

Chocolate on the other hand I have not given up.  LOL

  • I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and then maybe a cola a day....
  • Lately I've been having a big decaf coffee and chai tea. Maybe both in the same day, maybe not. Sometimes I have iced tea. Basically just staying away from all forms of soda (not due to caffeine, just unhealthiness), and regular coffee and espresso.

Before pregnancy I was a huge caffeine drinker, unlimited amounts of coffee all day.

  • I just saw that a can of Pepsi has 38mg of caffeine, and I have 1 daily, sometimes 2. I also drink about 60oz of water daily, so I don't feel too bad on the days I indulge in 2 sodas.
