Baby Names

Kelso

We recently found out that we are having a Boy. YAY!! :) My problem is that there is no name out there that I actually love.

DH is in love with the name Kelso. He hates any other name. I like it alright but not as much as he does. Anyone I've told the name to hates it!

I'm usually the first person to say "who cares what others think" but now because Im so on the fence about it I found myself wanting to know what you guys think lol!

Be honest! Kelso?

Re: Kelso

  • Yuck. Sorry. There are many great boy names out there, but this is not one of them. Are there names that you kind of like? List them so that you can get ideas of other similar names that you may not have thought of.

Names I also like are Carson, Caleb, umm not much else. DH hates those ones
  • I can't say I'm a fan. What are some other names you kind of like?

  • I do not like it as a fn and I also automatically thought of That 70's Show.

  • Thanks guys. I had a feeling there would be a lot of 70's references. To me, I don't let associations bother me. But I still can't love it as much as DH so I feel bad because I want to!

Actually, here is another question! We have a first name for a last name. Would anyone be more tempted to use a last name as the first? Or stick to making him a man with two first names?
  • I think it's a last name and makes an awful first name. Sorry.

  • Brig a man with two first names is far better than having a ln as a fn and fn as a ln.

Eh, I guess for me the answer would be no. However, my son's name is considered a last name... I would think people might mistake his name and mix it around? You guys seem to like the "c" and "k" letters... What about Cole, Christian, Christopher, Keith, Keegan, Cameron, Cody...?

Edit: I really like Kellen as suggested above me as well. Chance is a good one too :)

  • Sorry; I think it's really bad as a FN.
I do think that having a LN for a FN and a FN for a LN would actually be more confusing than having "two first names" b/c people will tend to think it was listed last name first, kwim?
I agree with considering names like Cole, Carson, Cameron, etc.

If the LN is a FN all the more reason to have a traditional FN as a FN IMO because otherwise I imagine the two will get mixed up constantly

And Kelso is bad, with or without the 70s association.

    What about Kelty or Keegan?

  • I gave all these suggestions to DH and he says no to them all. This is going to be one long road! I'm starting to see with him he wants it to be a K name and obviously quite different. But thanks ladies for ideas so far!

  • Kelso just screams That 70s Show to me too. I wouldn't do it. Maybe as a nn for something like Kellen.

Go with a fn for a fn... Otherwise people will get the order mixed up constantly... I've seen it happen. Two first names for a full name is better.

Here are some names that come to mind when I hear Kelso, as possible other suggestions: Kellen or Kellan, Kai, Malachi, Mateo, Keegan, Keaton, Bodhi or Boden, Brody, Deacon, Declan, Kelsey (yes, for a dude, like Kelsey Grammar), Kelly

  • I'm honestly not a huge fan of 'k' names, but:
Kade, Kasen, Korbin, kamden, Kieran, Kiernan, Keagan, Kenley, Kase, Kolton, Kyler, Kylen...

  • My nephew is Kellan and I looooove it. As for the last name thing, I'm the odd man out because I do like some LN as first names. DS is Reed and that is a last name. Other c/K and LN as first names I like are

    Kellan
    Kiernan
    Killian/Cillian
    Cian
    Carrick
    Carey
    Sullivan
    Mitchel
    Russell
    Harrison
    Brighton
    Griffin
  • This isn't just a name that a character shares - this name will make probably 90% of people think of this character, with a very...uh...strong stereotyped personality. It's awful. Besides the character, it is a LN. Sorry, I think it is terrible.

Like "Smith John"? No. Just no. You do that and you're in "Smith Jerrod" territory from Sex and the City. You do not want to use naming ideas from that show.
And, not to pile on, but Kelso is awful. Truly awful. There are so many good boy names out there -- both classic and more modern. Virtually any non-made-up name would be better than Kelso.

  • I didn't even watch That 70s show that much and my first thought about this name was - isn't that the name of that moron on That 70s show? My second thought was - didn't that moron Ashton K play that character? That's just one too many "moron" connections with this name.
  • I agree, it's pretty terrible and sounds like a last name. NN could be okay. My DH was insisting on a name I thought was terrible and I just kept saying no way. I like the suggestion of Kellen, sounds so much better! GL!
  • I have to admit that I really, really dislike it.

  • Yah sorry, I think it's terrible. I also think of 70s Show, and it was Michael's last name. It's not even a first name.

We used to call my sister Kelso as a nn. There was this program in our elementary school called "Kelso's choices" (Kelso was a frog who had a wheel of choices such as "walk away" for dealing with bullies etc).

I like Kelso as a nn for Kelsey and since it is originally a boy's names (as PPs have noted) I would vote for that.

  • I'd negotiate it for a nn?

  • Since you guys are having issues agreeing, I suggest you each come up with a list of at least 5 names, and give each other a certain number of vetos.  Since Kelso is a terrible name, I would probably use that as one of your vetos, but maybe to ease the sting, you can suggest it as a MN instead?

But really, he's being unreasonable if he won't give up on Kelso if you don't like it and not considering anything else...
