Ovulate Twice??

Hi Ladies! The husband and I just started TTC little one number two this month. These ovulation prediction kits are driving me nuts! I knew I was due to ovulate last week. We started having intercourse last Friday (Dec 20). Ovulation test showed smiley face Monday (Dec 23) had intercourse again, So today, almost a week later I was feeling like I could be ovulating again (a little cramping and increased discharge). I took the test again and sure enough; smiley face!! Is it possible to ovulate twice in one month a week apart? Does it also mean our TTC attempt probably didn't work? SO confused :-(

You can't really rely on those. Honestly, i would temp and track or just do the deed every other day to cover your bases.

No. The OPK picks up LH which spikes before ovulation, you can also have a LH surge and not ovulate. I think OPKs are best used with temping. OPKs tell you that your LH is surging and you might ovulate soon. Temping then confirms that you did ovulate.

Thanks ladies, I appreciate your input :-). To further complicate matters I'm using the test that also shows a blinking smiley that is supposed to tell you when the surge is about to happen.and it did! The test showed the blinking smiley in the morning and a solid smiley indicating ovulation by the evening. The test claims to be 99% accurate haha for the price it better be!

This doesn't complicate matters. It's still detecting the surge in LH. I guarantee it's 99% accurate in detecting an increase in the hormone. It's not 99% accurate in confirming ovulation.

Actually, you can sort of ovulate twice.  It's more like releasing more than 1 egg.  (See 2 babies in my siggy.) Buuut, the 2 (or more) eggs would release within 24 - 48 hours of each other.  NOT a week apart.  So as PPs said, you probably just surged and didn't really O the first time.  It happened to me more than once when we were TTC.

Yup, I would temp, sounds like you need the additional information to really figure out whats going on.

Yeah I think I'll try the temp tracking next month. Strangely enough when we conceived my son the ovulation tests never showed that I ovulated but I must have. these kits are just not worth it:-/

Can someone fill me in why anyone would use OPKs instead of temping? This situation seems no-so-rare.

The predictor only tells you when your body is gearing up to ovulate, not that you actually will or did ovulate. Taking your temperature each morning with a basal body thermometer is a much more accurate way of figuring out if you ovulated. You can also read the signs leading up to ovulation... plus it is way cheaper than kits. I paid $10 for my thermometer and will use it for years and years probably. 

Your body attempted to ovulate twice, you did not ovulate twice. We have no idea if you ever ovulated or if you ever will from OPKs. Were you sick or stressed around the time of the first surge? This would explain why your body held off and is trying again. Just keep having sex and don't worry about it too much. Start temping your next cycle.

Wasn't sick or stressed. I also try to gage ovulation based on CM; which was also a little wacky this month. Maybe I just got too crazy and obsessive because its our first attempt at TTC number two (and with number 1 I got pregnant on the first shot) ill definitely invest in a themometer for January.
