Cormac

DH and I like the name Cormac if this baby is a boy. However, I am having issues with the natural nickname Mac. I don't know how to get around that because it's just going to happen, I think. Any suggestions on other names like it without the obvious nickname? DS is Declan.

I don't have any other suggestions but I have to say that I LOVE Cormac and H is so uninterested.

As far as the NN goes just correct them as best you can. However when he hits elementary school it might be out of your control. I wouldn't let the NN Mac stop you. Cormac is great.

I don't think you can get around it other thantocall him by his full name. I like it a lot.

While I agree that a child might end up going with a NN of his or her own once in school, it is pretty likely that a child will choose to go by the name his parents call him, so, if you call him Cormac all of the time and correct people when he is young, it is likely he'll choose to go by Cormac. I'm not a huge fan of the name, but it obviously pairs nicely with Declan and I don't think the NN should deter you.

Is it pronounced more like cor-mick or cor-mac like tarmac (which I admit is what it makes me think of)? I think Cor is what it would likely get shortened to as well. 
Some other ideas: Kieran, Owen, Liam, Donovan, Oliver, Colin, Murphy, Ian, Shea or Finley?

I really love Cormac too.  I also think you shouldn't be stressing out over the nn "Mac". If it happens, it will happen.  Like pp suggested, call him by his full name - not a lot you can do when he goes off to school or develops friendships.

I think pronunciation is going to be somewhat dependent on region. I'm in the South, so it will probably be most often pronounced COR-mick.

Hmm I work with a Cormac. Is it silly that I've never considered calling him Mac? Great name!

I never wanted people to call my son Link or Linc but they inevitably do. I have just had to come to terms with it.

STUCK IN QUOTE That's how I'd pronounce it (not in the South), so the nn Mac wouldn't have occurred to me.

Mainer here and I say mick as well. I have only ever heard it used once for an author though so I use that pronunciation.

I think you can avoid the nn if you try. My boss's son goes by Matthew, a coworker is Catherine, my DH is Michael, and our daughter is Isabella... Not a single nn in sight. You may need to correct people here and there, but most people will get it.

And I agree with this. My nephew is Nathan and his parents hate the nn Nate. He almost never gets called Nate; people know better.

Don't worry about nicknames, this is such a great name and it is just lovely with Declan!

I wouldn't worry about it! I am pretty sure we are going with Kellan and I will most certainly correct people if they attempt to call him Kelly!

Thanks for all the thoughts. Looks like I am making too much out of the nickname. DH really likes it because it is such a masculine name, and I like the way it pairs with Declan so well.

I like Mac, but Cory was going to be my suggestion as well.

I guess I am the minority here, but I do not like it at all, nms. It reminds me of McCormick which is a food brand or Carmax which is a car delaership

It is a name, I think, that you either like or don't. There isn't much in between. I've found Declan to be much the same way. That's okay. We like Irish boy names.

I love Cormac. If you don't use Mac I dont think it is inevitable.
