Hearing Test?

DD passed hers with flying colors, but when they gave it to DS, they said he didn't pass in either ear. It freaks me out a little because both myself and DH had ear problems growing up (and it was heck for our parents because they won't really do anything about it until they're like two)... DH would put his ear all the way up to the speakers in his home because he just couldn't hear it. Most of our issues were solved with tubes and getting our adenoids removed, but I still only have 15% hearing in my right ear (my parents even started teaching me sign language because the doctors swore I would be deaf), and DH can barely hear out of his left. Plus, any time I get even a twinge in my ear, I cringe because you will NEVER forget that kind of pain.

The pediatrician said not to worry because there are plenty of reasons why it could be off (bad calibration, etc.), and I know he's not deaf because he threw his hands up in the air when I dropped my cell phone on the bathroom floor the other day, but the whole we can't get him into the hearing center because of the holidays crap keeps my worries up.

I was just wondering if any of you ladies' LOs didn't pass and turned out to be absolutely fine? Or how all of your tests went?

Yes! Our little guy didn't pass. They thought it was because he was 4 early, but when I expressed my concern the doctor just said it's not a big deal, wait a few weeks and we will try again and go from there. We waited 2 weeks and passed just find.

Worked at ENT clinic prior to my current job. It is VERY common for newborns to have fluid behind their eardrum when they are born. Resulting in failed newborn screenings. Get DS tested again, it will most likely have resolved by then. If not, tubes will likely be discussed or further hearing tests would be done. But, it is rare, sounds like he's going to pass the next exam with flying colors. I would watch him in the future though, he's at a slightly higher risk for needing tubes at some point in his life due to you and dad needing tubes.

My son failed the first go round but passed on the second try two days later. They said that it was probably the result of fluid. He was born by c section and we were told that c section babies rarely pass the first time because they get more fluid in their ears than babies born vaginally.

DS failed the first time, and the second time that they did the test in the hospital where they stuck a little thing in his ear and read something on a monitor that was connected to a cord. I don't think it was just a "hearing test" because when I started to get concerned, she said, "Oh he can definitely hear." So they came in the third day and stuck things to his head and did the test a different way. He passed with flying colors. The in-hospital pedi rolled her eyes and was super annoyed that they were acting so concerned about the failed test. She said it super common for newborns to have fluid and many time they try to do the test too early. Hope this helps

Mine passed his right ear but the tech had to come again the next day cause he did not pass the left. It caan be a few factors, one c-section babies do have alot more fluid in the ears then the babies born vaginally. As a matter of fact c-section babies have more fluid everywhere so that kinda sucks. If your baby was awake and moving during the test then that factors in.

They had to redo it several times because he wasn't passing, but the nurse was convinced it was background noise or something so she kept testing him and eventually he passed.

Same experience as some of the pps. She did not pass the first time in the hospital and I had a complete breakdown. Like ugly cried in front of the screening lady, my parents and all the nurses. I was convinced she was deaf. I also hadn't slept in two nights so I'm blaming that for the breakdown. She passed when they tested her the next day. They said newborns have a lot of fluid in their ears, and since I had a csection a lot of it didn't get cleared out. The pediatrician told me even kids that fail the second time go on to pass after a few weeks. Your LO will most likely be fine!

Thanks ladies! All of this makes me feel so much better! Hopefully, everything will go fine when he gets re-tested. If it's so easy to fail, it makes me wonder why they even do it at all so soon after birth... just to freak us out? LOL

My LO also failed at the hospital. I'm not too worried bc she jumps at noises and turns her head to find our voice. We are getting retested on the 10th. FX that they both pass this time.
