Pregnant and NO insurance

I am unsure what to do. This is my first pregnancy and very unexpected, thinking am around 5 weeks or so, and I don't have insurance. I am currently separated from my verbally abusive husband and living on my own. I really would love some guidance, links, contact information on how to get to the doctors. I can't afford it out of pocket even though I have a full-time job. I live in the Philadelphia, PA area.

Any help would be so grateful as this is stressing me out MAJOR.

Re: Pregnant and NO insurance

  • I would guess your OB office has a social worker to help you. Good luck.

  • You should apply for medicaid. I know in the state  of Pennsylvania they want all uninsured pregnant women to have insurance and they have a special program through medicaid. You will most likely be approved. Go to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare's website. The program is called Healthy Beginnings. Good Luck!
  • Are you wanting to keep the baby, or are you undecided? I'm assuming from your questions that you do. You could always contact Planned Parenthood for pregnancy confirmation as well as counseling regarding your options. They probably also could help with low cost maternity care options and suggestions of how to proceed if you
    don't qualify for Medicaid.

  • Thank you so much for everyone's help! It has helped me not freak out as much! ANy other comments or additions would be very appreciative.
  • Yes apply for Medicaid! I don't have insurance either but I've been on medicaid for both pregnancies. And on the plus side, once your baby is born they automatically qualify too. You just call the medicaid office once he/she is born and they'll enroll him for a year. Apply ASAP because it can be a long process!!
  • I am applying right now. So did you basically wait till your approved to go to the doctors for your baby then?

Because of the fact that it took so long to get all my paper work, I could periodically call my medicaid office to find out if I got approved or not. Then once I got the okay, I called them to find out what my medicaid ID # was. Most drs that take medicaid just need your medicaid number to schedule your appt. In some states Medicaid is done through different companies, while in others its just done through the state its self. So depending on how its like where you live, you may have to choose a company and a plan. Then again you might not. But while you're waiting to get approved, I'd start looking into what drs accept Medicaid and whether or not they're accepting new patients.
  • OP, I again recommend that you get to Planned Parenthood or somewhere ASAP. According to your other post you've had spotting and clots for several weeks now- I would definitely want to get that checked out!

  • i did call there on friday and the earliest they have is last week of January. that just seems so late! ill be along another month! thats why I'm worried about medicaid or whatnot kicking in late. i don't get how people do this!!
  • you don't need to pay or the pay is very low?
  • Sounds like you got some awesome advice, good luck!

I just had to apply for Medicaid as well in IL as a secondary policy to cover my high deductible, as I cannot pay it right now because of other monthly debts.

  • I wish you the very best! And, good for you for leaving your abusive husband!
  • yes, you are right, it has gotten harder and things have not been easy. Just trying to stay as stress free and calm as possible for this child.
  • There is an ob clinic at Abington. It's free or very close to.

  • It's great you're on your own and you were strong enough to get out. It took my ex husband being verbally and phyiscally abusive for years for me to leave so you have already taken the first big step. Next I would suggest looking at your states health care exchange or medicaid. If you need to talk to any one you can always pm me my exhusband was very bad to me and I'm willing to listen or share if you need.

  • I'm really sorry to hear about your situation with your husband. I have been in abusive relationships but never with a baby in the way. It takes a strong woman to leave their abusive husband at anytime, let alone when they are preparing for a child. I really hope you get everything figured out. Best of luck to you and your future LO.
  • Thank you to all of you for the LOVE!
