High-Risk Pregnancy

glyburide

Hi there! I usually post on the March 14 board but I had a specific question that I'm not sure they could answer. I've been GD for about 3 weeks now and have been taking my measurements with good numbers for the most part. My fasting number is the problem, I rarely get it below 100 (never above 110 though). On Friday the OB put me on 1.25 mg of glyburide at night to see how I do with that. I'm not sure when the best time to take it is though. I have been taking it with my evening snack around 9-930 pm and my fasting numbers have not changed. I am going to email the OB and ask her if I need to up the dose or take it at a different time but I wanted to see what your experience was because I may not hear back for a few days at least with the holiday coming up. I'd really like to get this number down since I know its not great for the baby to be high so often throughout the day. Thanks!

Re: glyburide

  • I'm sorry, I really have no experience with it, but your doctor didn't give you any guidelines of when to take it?  I take a nightly insulin dose because my fasting numbers were too high, and I take it right before dinner.  Maybe try earlier since it doesn't seem to be lowering them when taken with your snack.  Or, it might turn out that you just need a higher dose.  But I'd try taking it earlier until you can hear from your doc.

  • I take nightly insulin because my fasting numbers were too high. I take mine around 9:30-usually just before bed. I am able to sleep in most mornings, though, too. My insulin did have to be increased once (from 12 to 14 units) because they didn't like what my fasting numbers were doing. My peri said that typically, GD and glucose intolerance peaks around 32 weeks.

  • I take mine right before bed and I'm on the 2.5 mg. High fasting numbers have been my issue as well. It's because my body has a hard time processing sugar from fat stores that get used at night but it doesn't have any problems processing sugar from food. My doctor said I should be taking it right before bed and that I should try to have my snack in the middle of the night if I'm awake. He also said I need to be getting up by 7 to check my sugar and eat something otherwise it will spike again. Mine hasn't lowered completely but it did go down about 10 points. Usually it was 115, now it's 90-95.

  • I'd say ask your doctor because I can't remember when I took it when I was on it. I seem to remember that gyburide should work for about 12 hours? So if you're taking it by 9:30pm and testing by 9:30am, then it should be in effect still but I may be off with that memory.

Just wanted to add that sometimes when you introduce new meds/doses it takes more than a few days for your body to show results of them working. I know for me I never saw results for at least 3-5 days after starting.

  • Thanks ladies, I did hear back from my doctor and she said to increase the dose to 2.5 mg and to continue taking it with my night time snack. Hopefully it will work!

  • I take mine right before bed and I have found that any variation in when I take it affects my morning numbers. For me, taking it at 11 pm and then testing at 8 am or earlier has been just the right time frame.
