I'm of the mindset that for the most part nn's are really an anything goes territory, unless you plan on calling the child exclusively by their nn.
As far as standalone names - Lillian and Lilly/Lily are standalone names for sure. My DH's mom's name is spelled Lillie, but she's over 60 years old and I think for that time and where she grew up - this was considered okay.
I consider Lily to be a stand-alone name, Lilly or Lillie to be NNs for Lillian, and Lilli to be a hot mess. I've also seen Lily as a NN, but prefer it as its own name.
I prefer Lillian. NN are basically anything goes. I love Lil as a NN for Lillian!
I also like Lily as a stand alone name. I would never spell it any other way personally, but I wouldn't side eye someone who spelled it Lillie or Lilly.
my daughter is "Lily" I remember when I was pregnant with her some people were saying,"give her a real name..." Well I am SO happy I went with my gut as Lily is truly a Lily and not a Lillian or a Lilianna... ( not that there is anything wrong with those names, they're just nms)
