Pretentious Names?

Hi Ladies,

I totally understand if people are getting tired of the name posts, but I could use your help. DH and I are considering a few names (for girls and boys since we don't know what we're having) and I worry that we're picking pretentious names. Can you help me by letting me know if these names sound too posh or hoighty-toighty?

Girls: Camille (DH loves the nickname 'Cami' for a little girl), Charlotte

Boys: Gabriel (probably use 'Gabe' quite a bit)

Any other names that you have heard that seem a bit snobbish?

  • Not sure how a name can be snobbish,

I don't like Gabriel for a boy personally. I also don't really think those are pretentious sounding names. I love both Camille or Charlotte BTW.

When I think pretentious names I usually think of something like Norman Theodore Comfort III (went to high school with this dude) or Francis Beauford Vanderbilt IVX
Haha, thank you! I promise we won't add roman numerals to the end of the names!

Thanks for your input! We just don't want to tell friends and family the names we are considering and I feel like it's such a big decisions that I really appreciate the help.

  • They're nms, but nothing wrong with those names. When I think pretentious names, I think of mythological figures, or super-macho/feminine traits like Legend, Maverick, Princess, Precious, etc.

  • Well, my MIL has said that 3 of our top names sound "stuck up" (Kendall, Lindsey, and Grace). Whatever :-/

I totally disagree with your MIL, too - those are great names! How can Lindsey and Grace be 'stuck up'?

Totally disagree with your MIL. Those names are not pretentious at all. We did not share DS name until after he was born b/c I didn't want my in-laws' opinion. Probably will do the same this time. I will share with some close friends and my mom and dad, but my in-laws are just too opinionated so they will find out after the decision is final and baby is here.

  • I told my grandma that we liked Charlotte... She said "yuck". They actually are all very French and I don't think that's pretentious (as a dengue myself). They are nice classic names.
  • Not pretentious at all!

  • Well if we have a boy, he will be the third as DH is a Jr. Hmm...I don't want his name to sound pretentious being a third. And husbands name is a little snobby I think. his first name is Gordon.
  • I think Camille sounds "stuck up" Mostly because I knew a girl by that name and she was such a bitch. I love Charlotte but Gabriel is nms.

  • I like Camille but Charlotte is too popular for my tastes.

    Gabriel is NMS.

  • We're using Charlotte if we have a girl, and we already have a Catherine.  I think pretentious comes more with the personalities than the actual names.  I love Gabe, so I think Gabriel is fine, too :)

Those dont sound stuck up at all! I'm actually leaning towards Grace if we have a girl. Boy name is easy because we are going with a junior.. Jacob John to be exact.. we find out Thursday!

I as not a fan of Gabriel but I like Gabe for short. And Camille is cute and different.

  • I love Camille, and I especially love the nickname Cami. My nickname is Kamie (no one calls me by my full first name), and I have always been very fond of it.

  • I love Camille but I can see how it could sound a little snobbish... however I think it's all in the interpretation based on someone I know with that name who really IS a snob. If I grew up with a super nice and humble girl named Camille, I'm sure it would have a different connotation to me, know what I mean? Also I love Gabriel but I'm partial to it as it's a family name for us.

One of our top boy picks is Baron, which someone else mentioned could be snobby sounding but I don't think it sounds snobby at all (I also love the nickname "Bear") so it's really all in the interpretation. If you guys love a name - go with it!

  • I love all three of those names. None of them are pretentious - I think they're all pretty mainstream.

  • Thanks, @babygabe614 ! I see what you mean about connotations - we all have people we know who we could NEVER name our children after!

I love the nickname Bear for a little boy.
