Reflux baby

DS has reflux. But he's what Drs call "happy spitter", i.e. he's gaining weight without a problem. That said, I think when he has symptoms he tries to soothe himself with more milk (which just ends up part of the spit up cycle). This basically means he's breastfeeding every 1.5 hrs....I've talked to the pedi and they recommend giving him the pacifier (which he refuses to take since birth, and we tried a few different shapes) so he doesn't "overeat". Better yet, when he does nap it is only on me or DH, the second we try to put him down (bassinet, swing, bouncer, car seat, or elevated crib) he wakes up crying....the only thing that soothes him is breastfeeding. DD was totally different, so I am not sure what to do here, poor kid doesnt get much rest. For the record, I've tried to address the root cause of the reflux by cutting all the dairy from my diet, which mostly just made him less gassy. Any advice from those who's kids have/had reflux?

Re: Reflux baby

  • I would try meds.

  • Is he on zantac (or generic)? My kids have all had reflux and not one of them has had trouble with weight gain but we still opted for meds because of the discomfort involved. My only other advice is prop/sit him up after a feeding for 30+  min. The feeding cycle is hard to break when they won't take a bink, you can keep offering or try to find a distraction to extend the time between feedings. DD2 likes being laid across my lap on her belly.

  • DS has reflux. We've seen a vast improvement since he started Zantac. He was also overeating before we started the meds. He will sleep well in his crib, but we never put him right down after eating. We hold him semi-upright for 20 minutes after he finishes. We also make sure to burp, burp, and burp again so hopefully nothing comes up later.

The real PITA are his hiccups; he can sometimes get them 3 times a day and they can last 30 or 40 minutes! Since starting the Zantac though, he usually gets them only once a day now.

Good luck. It's challenging dealing with this but we've seen such a difference very shortly after he started medication. He never arches his back in pain anymore and feedings are a lot more pleasant for everyone now.
  • I had to demand medication treatments for DD. Once the medications kicked in, she has slept soundly, and will on occassion spit up but not the frequency nor quantity it was.

Your doctors offered sound advice to you, yes, but clearly the natural methods alone aren't working. Once your LO is on meds, you should still follow natural methods too (burp, sit up for 15-20min after eating)

  • Thanks everyone. A question about gripe water, any concerns about allergies to the ingredients?

  • @karissa2009 - we use the gripe water but it hasn't helped his hiccups. We also tried Colic Calm and that didn't seem to make much difference. I'm afraid we're just going to have to wait for him to outgrow it.

It's basically sugar syrup with ginger and fennel, a little citrus, and some baking soda so I doubt there would be too much concern with allergies but as always check with your pedi. :)
