Canceled our vacation to Colorado +update+

DS is sicker than ever and the rash is beyond horrible. He is covered head to toeI and is even swollen. I am really thinking this may be measles or, at least, rubella. All he does is lay here and moan. His temp is still high. He won't eat or drink. We have been up all night. It is looking less like it is Roseola as the fever would be lessening and he would be getting better Iif that was it. DH is holding him right now and we are just waiting for his dr's appointment.

The Broadmoor gave us back the money but we may have to eat the airline tickets. Of course, that is minor. I will update you after the appt...although yesterday the doc said if it was rubella or measles, it just had to run its course.

I just want to say that this should be a lesson on good reasons to vax. My son and all of your children can't have full immunity to measles or rubella until they get their second vax at 4 years. I should not even have to be worrying about measles or rubella if heard immunity was in effect but because so many people don't vax, it could be what he has.

Also, if my parents had not vaccinated me (or I did not have immunity) and this is rubella, my unborn child could be seriously at risk right now...more so
than my live child.

At any rate, keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Sorry for any typos. Typing fast. But please pray if you do that.

Edit: We saw two different doctors and both said viral rash...but could not say which one. They tested him for epstein barr and the flu. Both were negative. They offered to test him for Rubella, but since it was a blood draw and not just a finger prick, I declined. Plus, they basically said there was not anything they could do other than let it run its course regardless of whether it was measles, rubella or something else. They did not think roseola anymore because he has now had a fever for 8 days. The second doctor said on a scale of 1 to 10 his rash was a 9 or 10. Basically, they just sent us home and said to go to the hospital if he goes into respiratory distress. It was not very satisfying.

  • So sorry you are dealing with this. Good vibes being sent your way. I'm glad that you have an immunity so that you don't have to worry about catching it while pregnant.

    Vaccinate your kids, people!

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I'm so sorry your DS is so sick! :(  That's the absolute worst feeling! I hope they figure it out and get him feeling better soon!

Great news that you got a portion of your vaca $ refunded. When you have more time and energy to devote to it, you should see if the airline will give you a voucher for future use.

  • I am so sorry you are having to deal with your child being so sick and canceling your trip. I couldn't agree more with the need for people to vaccinate, as diseases we never used to see are making a comeback because people choose not to vaccinate. So frustrating especially since this puts lives at risk. Hugs and I hope the rash and fever improve soon.
  • That's terrible.  I hope your DS is feeling better soon.  I would have been torn with the blood draw too, but I think I would have HAD to know if it was Rubella.

Will he be immune if he did, in fact, have it?

  • Thoughts and prayers for your family and for your DS to start feeling better ASAP

There would be more antibodies than just a regular vaccinated person.

I was not going to put him through that just to know. It doesn't effect th the course of treatment and it was hard enough just to get a finger prick off of him. It took 2 if us holding him down and a nurse to do just that. They would have had to strap him down. I wasn't doing that to my child who is already crying non stop and miserable.

well, that makes sense.  Hope that he AND YOU feel better soon.  Nothing worse than feeling helpless for your child when they are sick.

and it's yet another wake-up call for a real conversation re: vaccinations.  It worries me that you could have been at such a great risk.

Apparently, only 95 percent of people who are vaccinated with both of the MMR vaccines actually get immunity from it. (I just learned this!) And apparently the immunity is even less before kids have had both vaccines. I just found out my MIL has no immunity to Rubella even though she has been vaccinated. All of these people rely on herd immunity to keep them safe. And it generally did in the past. But so many people are now not vaccinating that there are now outbreaks. It really pisses me off because they are putting us all at risk.

I am thankful in that it sounds like from my OB (the pedi told me to call) that I have immunity to rubella. But if I didn't, it could be really bad for the baby.

It pisses me off too that people don't vax! I was vaccinated for MMR and am part of the 5% who aren't immune. I found out from my first tri bloodwork. I'll get the shot again after I deliver, but I'm terrified of the kids at school who aren't vax'ed.

  • I'm sure the drs thought of this, but just wanted to mention that my son had a full body rash with strep throat in the spring. He was only 14 months so "too young for strep" but that's what it was. They said Scarlet Fever and i freaked out, thinking of Little Women, but it's usually nbd with antibiotics. My son had other complications with it, but that's another story.

    Hope he feels better soon!

My daughter had the "scarlet", I also freaked until I learned that it is in fact, the strep rash.
  • Praying for everyone.

Side note: I was fully Vax' for everything growing up and now do not have immunity to rubella, haven't for either pregnancy. So just because you vax doesn't mean you have the immunity for life.

I know. That was my point above. 5 percent of people who are vaccinated do not develop immunity. A partially vaccinated child (like my DS) also is at higher risk. About 4 percent of measles cases are in fully vaccinated people and about 14 percent in partially vaccinated people. Since most kids don't get their second shot until they are 4 years old and their first until 12 to 15 months, that means a whole huge segment of the population is at risk. These people depend in heard immunity. And for a lot of years that worked. But since the anti-vax movement, we no longer have heard immunity.

Edit: called a shot a shit

Seriously.  It bugs me like no other that the anti-vaccine people get all snotty and "well why do you care what my family does?  If you vaccinate it doesn't hurt you at all."  with the na-na-boo-boo implied.  My son has all the shots he's supposed to get, but I worry about the diseases that have multi-dose vaccines.  I especially worry about the first couple months of this baby's life after scaring myself on Google about pertussis in babies who are too young for their first shot.

I hope your kiddo is healthy again really soon.
