In desperate need of overnight diaper advice!

I've posted about this before, probably a month or two ago. I'm trying again because I'm at my wit's end and am hoping for some new suggestions. DS will be 14 months on the 2nd and for about four months now we've been having problems with him soaking throug diapers at night. We've tried every brand of "overnight" diapers. He wears size 4 during the day so we've tried size 4 as well as size 5 in the various overnights. We've tried doubling up the overnight diapers. We've tried putting the diapers on backwards (he's a tummy sleeper). As a last resort I put a woman's maxi pad inside of his first diaper (horizontally along the top, as that's where he overflows). That worked for three nights in a row and I thought I finally had a solution. The three nights were a fluke, though, I guess. He's back to soaking through (badly). Peeing through two diapers, a pad, his pj's, and leaving his sheets very wet. DS has a super bladder, apparently. I thought it would improve when he was 100% off the bottle! but he's completely done with them now and no improvement has been seen. He has supper at 5:30, including water or milk, and then goes to bed between 6:30-7. Please, I'm willing to try anything (except depriving DS beverages). TIA

No, if his last drink is around 5:30 and he isn't going to bed for another 1-1 1/2 hour then really that should be ok. 

• Does he have a warm bath most nights?  Maybe that would encourage him to pee before his night diaper.
• Is he wearing two piece pjs?  I find that two piece pjs encourage wicking of urine.  I only put my middle son in 1 piece pjs for this very reason.

He only wears one piece footie pj's. No, his baths aren't typically right before bed, but that's a very good idea. Idk why I didn't think of that because running his bath water does always make him pee. (Well, we have a 3 month old, so evenings/bedtime is hectic, so that's probably why I haven't. Haha)

I think the pp had the only idea possible... I think you've tried everything else. We do Huggins overnights one size larger and that works for us. Sorry I'm not more help

haha, I definitely get it!  I've still got 3 kids 3 years old and younger for another month!  Dinner, bath, and bedtime for all 3 is INTENSE. 

Have you mentioned this to your pedi?  I doubt there's any kind of issue but it never hurts to talk about things.  How much does he drink in the two hours prior to dinner?  Is he kinda afternoon loading his drinks?

I haven't mentioned it to his ped yet but think I will in February. He sleeps so well from 7pm - 6:30am, I really just hate the thought of disrupting that with a diaper change. Also lately he's been screaming when I put him on changing table, so not sure that'd go over well.

He doesn't really overload on liquids at night. I'd say he drinks a (straw) sippy from 5-6pm. It's so strange. I just can't find a solution. I'll have to try the bath though. Force the pee outta him!!

The bath is a great idea.  My only other thought is to try a "diaper doubler".  I found some at Babies R Us, and they were amazing for DS when he was soaking through.

Maybe go up to a 6 for bedtime. DS is in a size 4 in some brands, a 5 in others during the day. He wears a 6 at night now when he started soaking out of the 5's.

Make sure the diaper is pulled up a bit higher in the front, since boys soak the front the most.
 

You could also try Bambo Nature brand diapers. They are pricy, but are free of harmful chemicals and top absorbency charts in comparison testing. If you email the company, they may send you a free sample. And just for good measure, I would stick with at least a size 5 or up if you do.

Have you thought about putting a cloth diaper cover over his diaper? We use cloth exclusively but I've heard of other moms doing this. If you buy 2 covers you could just rotate them - I'm sure you do enough laundry with 2 LOs in the house, just throw the cover he wears in with some laundry every day. It'll cost you about $30 for them, but that's cheaper than trying every disposable diaper on the planet :P

I don't think we have a superheavy wettter like you, but we've had very good luck with cloth diapers.  we use them all the time though, day and night.  I've even let a friend borrow one to try one night, and it was the only morning she didn't have to wash sheets.  We use bumgenious pocket diapers with a hemp doubler for the night time.

We had this problem for months. I tried every different kind of overnight diaper and doubled up. I bought Pampers Extra Protection on a whim and not one leak since!!

You could try these - it's a booster pad that is meant to go in the diaper as an extra layer of protection. Some reviews do mention that their LO developed diaper rash though from using them.

I agree with previous posts that mentioned the diaper doublers.  We use the ones that BRU sells, along with a Pampers Extra Protection diapers in a size 5.  DS wears 4's during the day.  We've had issues on and off with leaks and this seems to be working best for us.  Good luck!

We did this when DS was younger and it worked great. But he was leaking around the legs, not from the top. When he started leaking from the top, I tried it again and it didn't work.  But it's a great idea and definitely worth a shot!

Good point Meery82!  We didn't usually see leaks from around the legs.  DS leaks from the top, maybe that's why diaper doublers worked for us.

The link for the Booster pads on Amazon is exactly the diaper doublers we used with DS from BRU.  Made a huge difference... I just always made sure to have a little sticking out the top of his diaper since he was a big tummy sleeper.  Good luck!

I would try an even bigger size diaper.  DS will be 16 months tomorrow.  We use BRU plastic pants in size 2T and if they are pulled over his tummy, he stays dry.  They also have diaper booster pads, although I have yet to try those.

Thanks so much for all the tips, ladies! We tried a warm bedtime bath tonight and put him in a size 5 Huggie's overnight (they were too big when we tried last month, so hopefully they work now). I, nervous that it's not going to end well and I'll have a mad lil boy in the wee hours of the morning. Wish me luck! @smileybabyboy How much does your DS weigh? It's hard to believe my DS is already big enough for 2T! I'm in denial of him growing. Haha I think he was 22-26lb at his 12 month appt. The cloth diaper covers...do they absorb in addition to he diapers? Are they something that'd need washed after each wear, most likely?

DS is 25 pounds.  He is in size 4 diapers during the day and size 5 at night. He is also a tummy sleeper and I have found if the top of his diaper is over his belly button, that also helps a little.  We use size 2T in plastic pants so they are big enough to pull over his tummy. If they smell like urine (not always), I'll throw them in with the rest of the wash and let them air dry.  Good luck!!!

They don't absorb, they just keep the pee contained.  They would have to be washed if he continued to leak through the diapers, but if the warm bath and whatnot help, and he didn't leak every night, you can reuse them.  We use cloth and I do diaper laundry every other day, so I use one cover for 2 nights, then wash.  It could go in with any laundry though, they don't get saturated in pee so that you need to rinse and wash them separately.

I have Thirsties diaper covers and they say that they can be reused a few times without washing, as long as it's not visibly soiled. Just wipe out the inside with a wipe or damp cloth. The inside is a non-porous, vinyl type of material.

If he persists in wetting through my attempts I am definitely going to look into getting those covers. The warm bath and size 5 Huggies worked last night. I'm not sure which did the trick so tonight we did size 5 without the bath. I guess we'll see!!

Thanks! I haven't tried the booster pads, but I put a woman's maxi pad in his diaper which I would think would be pretty similar. It worked for about 3 nights then failed. I like the idea of the pants since they can be reused...if they'd work. I switched it up tonight with a Huggie's overnight over top a Pamper's overnight. Trying all combos until I get to a BRU/order. I'll be in a city that has a BRU on Friday, so hopefully I'll have time to stop in. Thanks for all your help!

DD wears sz 4 pampers, but 5 overnight nighttime diapers, but you've already tried this.  DD goes to bed at 8 and has an 8oz bottle before this, but we cut off her water around 5:30/6 at the very latest.  Figure all this fluid is out by 7:30 (right after bath).  Maybe don't give water after 4:30 or 5 if he goes to bed at 6:30.

Have you tried Cruisers in a bigger size? we switched to Cruisers because we have a wiggle worm and a bigger size at night works for us even tho he is a heavy drinker... one thing we found was that if he had a onesie on it seemed to make matters worse, pressure I guess ...so we go for the two piece PJ's for the most part with no onesie under...
