Razors

I am so sick of paying for expensive blades and throwing them away. Any thoughts especially for DH?

Re: Razors

  • Straight razor?
  • mens razors are insanely expensive.  it's one of the top ten most stolen items (according to some article I read)

  • My husband likes to get the off-brand or razors with less blades at Costco. He just gets a big pack of disposables and changes them out every couple of weeks. I want to say one of those packs last him half a year. I've also seen commercials for a razor sharpener but I've never used it. Don't know if it would be worth looking into or not.
  • My husband uses an old school safety razor, with flat two sided blades. I think the one he has is German. The replacement blades are super cheap and very sharp. You can get them on Amazon among other places. He has been using it for about a year, and I have heard no complaints.

  • Shave less often?

I was married for 2 years before I realized DH had a razor that needed replacement blades because he shaved so infrequently.

So I obviously don't have any suggestions.
  • What kind are you using? I think it is worth buying nicer, more expensive ones (i.e. 5 blade like Venus or fusion) since they last longer because of better quality and because they do a much better job-hence shaving less often.

  • I was cursing myself yesterday after my shower. I cheaped out and bought those silk razors instead of my basic Venus ones. I cut myself at least three times and have stinging razor burn, even 24 hours later. Bah! Aaaaand, I bought a crap ton of them. Like 24, which will last at least a year. :(

I buy Venus so don't change blades often prob every two months. DH on the other hand goes through a blade a week. I literally just bought him $50 worth of Gillette fusion a month and a half ago and he says he needs more I don't get it.

My dad swears by putting your razor in a cup of mineral oil after you've shaved and rinsed it clean. The oil keeps the blade from rusting and dulling as fast because it pulls the water off.

I've heard of rinsing it off with alcohol after each use.  Apparently, the blades don't really get dull from shaving, but more from the effects of being stored wet.  If you take care of your razors, they will last a really long time.  Of course, I'm not actually speaking from experience.  I just take MK's advice and shave less ;)

Um... Sounds like it might not be the razors that are the problem. I can't imagine why he would go through them that fast! Maybe like pp said, he needs to take better care I'd them or something? But honestly, I would have to assume that he is changing before he should be.
