Carpal Tunnel postpartum

I had carpal tunnel during my third trimester in one hand....basically the tops of my pointer finger, middle finger and thumb were numb.  It went away shortly after delivery but now at 4 months pp it returned!  Has this happened to anyone else?  Do you know why?  I thought I got it during pregnancy due to water retention but I don't think I'm retaining water right now.  I still have gotten my first pp yet either... (and I'm not breastfeeding)....could it returning and this is just hormones causing it?

TIA!

Re: Carpal Tunnel postpartum

  • My twins are two and I still have it.  I got hand/wrist braces I wear at bedtime (very sexy).  It helps.  I have heard for many moms it goes away.

  • I had at during pregnancy with DD1. I didn't get it with the twins until after they were born. It sucks. Especially when trying to feed them. Hope it goes away soon for you.

  • There is something called "mommy wrist", which I got when DD was probably about a year old, give or take. It is basically carpel tunnel from changing diapers, dressing, lifting, etc. a friend of mine had it too. Think about all the tweaking of your wrists you do with a baby. You can get wrist guards for about $15 each and that helped me.
  • Thanks for the suggestions, i think I will try a wrist guard at night!

This. I got "mommy thumb" when they were a few months old and it was brutal. Felt like something was popping and dislodging when I would move my thumb a certain way. I wore a brace every night and it has actually magically disappear a few weeks ago (hopefully forever). But it lasted well over a year and other than surgery or cortisone injections, there's not much you can do for it :(.

I have had random acts of numbness, similar to CP, off and on for the full last year PP. Usually in my right arm/fingers and my right leg. Mine doesn't last long or happen too often (a few times a week), but it is rather frustrating. I never had it prior to the twins, despite having spent all of my "working" time on computers for the last 8yrs and having had two singletons prior to the twins.

  • Glad you posted this has been happening to me in my thumb...sooooo painful! Just in time to have to care for/lift the babes such a pain!
  • I had it really badly in my last trimester and couldn't do anything like read a book or play around on the computer at the end a nd wore braces on both hands, it went away somewhat pp but still lingered  & I finally went to the orthopedist- I got a much better brace than I had bought over the counter and also a steroid injection in the worse wrist which worked amazing wonders. So I would advise when pg or postpartum to go to the specialist and get the good brace b/c it made such a difference compared to the other braces, and if it is really bad, consider an evaluation for a steroid injection. GL!
  • Weirdly mine goes away when I exercise and do pushups (which hurts at first but then after weeks feels better) and other exercises that require me to build arm strength. So painful, ugh.
