Syringe or Bottle

DD is EBF.

Now, I need to administer "baby zantac" (1.5ml) 2x a day, plus 1mL of Vitamins.
I was thinking of mixing the medication & vitamins with breastmilk for flavor and administer it in a syringe or bottle - right now there isn't breastmilk and its a struggle to give it to her straight in a syringe - she hates the taste (bitter peppermint).

Would you give her the syringe or bottle? If not, how do you give your baby their vitamins/meds?

  • My LO is on Zantac as well, she hates it! I pump a bottle a day for DH to give her so we put the meds in there. It works great cuz she is also on the vitamin as well and hates having to take both.

  • You really shouldn't give meds in a bottle, esp with a reflux baby. They need to be able to absorb it and you can't guarantee how much of the medication they get if they spit up the bottle. Try squirting it inside her cheeks instead of onto her tongue or mix it with a tiiiiny bit of bm.

I probably should have added a disclaimer to my post, that I talked with my ped first. My LO has silent reflux and spitting up wasn't one of her symptoms and she rarely does,so our ped says it's fine but pp's post makes sense so I would ask your ped.
  • I put the Zantac into the tip of a nipple.  She will usually take two good sucks before she realizes what it is and that is enough to get it down. We try to get her about 15-20 minutes before eating (she takes it twice a day).  Not sure why silent reflux would make taking it on an empty stomach any different.  Isn't the difference that silent reflux just means they are swallowing it in place of spitting it up?  While I am sure it is ok to mix or give it right before (we have had to do that if our daughter is too hungry) I think you would have better results with waiting at least 15 minutes.

  • My daughter is on heart medication and the nurses at Children's Hospital recommended that you take the nipple off of the bottle and when they start to suck, shoot the syringe in the nipple. It works every time.

This. We give DS Zantac also but try to get it in his cheeks where he can't easily spit it out. He clearly hates the taste but that seems to work pretty well. Also, the doc wants it administered before he eats, not with his milk.
  • I do it w the syringe, per the pharmacist's instructions.

  • Mixed it with BM last night and gave it in a syringe, worked great so far.

  • Just a suggestion, but you can also get it flavored with the grape flavoring. It makes it a little easier to get down, especially as they get older. DS1 was on it until he was a year old and the grape flavoring really helped.
