Cribs: what color, combo?

I'm looking at cribs and am debating on what to get. I like white, but thinking that white never stays white when it comes to kids. Also not sure what is better, a combo crib or separate changing table and crib. Just curious what type of crib and color you have purchased and what you think of it. I have a bunch of gift cards from Christmas and am itching to use them :)

Re: Cribs: what color, combo?

  • We were planning to do white but after seeing them in person are opting for grey. We will set up a changing pad on top of the dresser instead of getting a separate changing table. I think some of the combo cribs say the changing table later becomes a bedside table or something but I didn't do much research on it as we weren't going to use convertible cribs.

  • We are getting white.  We are going to get a separate small dresser with the changing pad on top.

  • I originally really wanted a combo crib, until I saw one in person. They are nice, but the changing table is a lit shorter than the standard changing table size, and I do not believe it will be practical (especially if the baby is tall, like DH and I). That being said, my cousin and has a combo and loves it! Her rooms are tiny, and this really clears up rooms.
As for color - I want wood, mostly because I think it will last this longest. However, I LOVE white cribs, I just have the same hesitation you mentioned.
  • We will do dark wood (espresso finish) with a separate changing pad/area on top of the dresser. My best friend has a combo and it won't be long before her 9 month old doesn't fit comfortably in there anymore because he is so long. It also looks awkward for her to reach him in the changing area, I'm not sure how to describe it but I would want some more "elbow room" if that makes sense.

  • We have a convertible crib and just use our dresser as a changing table. DS furniture is espresso, as we wanted it to be something we could keep for awhile and we tend to like darker furniture. We will probably do dark furniture again but if this one is a girl I might go with white.. Who knows! :)
  • We have white for DD's room and it is in great shape and still very white. I wouldn't be concerned about it getting dirty.
  • We plan to do the espresso crib and separate dresser with changing pad on top. DH is 6'4", so we anticipate a long bebe. And I also like the aesthetic of dark wood - matches the rst of the house.

  • I would never spend money on a crib with a built on changing table. I feel a better use of money is to get a crib that converts to a big bed and/or a toddler bed. You can always make your own changing station on top of a dresser. That way their furniture transitions with them longer.

  • We have a white crib (Graco Lauren) and I love it- it's still perfectly white and I love how it lightens the room.  It's stood up to 2.5 years of baby/toddler abuse and we'll use it for LO #2 as well.

I would get a separate changing table.  We used the Hemnes Ikea chest and it's awesome!  We used a changing table for like 20 months and I don't think the ones that are attached are very large.  Now it's become DD's dresser- very versatile.

  • I don't think changing table cub combos are that great. Awesome idea, but I can see later when baby is a little bigger reaching for things and uplift everything down. That is if you I've things sitting up there like a lot of parents do.
I also wanted to do a white crib. But I've now decided on buying a used crib and painting it a color. Much more fun!
  • We are getting a white crib with espresso trim, best of both worlds! The espresso is along the parts where the most wear and tear will be so that should help with the cleanup factor.  We are getting a matching dresser that is white with espresso pulls and top that we will be using as a changing station.image

  • @eltrain5 that's cute!

We're doing two white cribs. We're using one room as a sleep room (cribs, rockers, changing table, etc) and one as the functional room (dressers, armoire, changing station #2, etc).

Exactly this. We will probably be doing espresso again for this baby. For Charlie we have the Munire furniture. Love it. I think his actual set is called Belize?

  • Ours is like a red maple. I don't know the exact color name. For the most part, I hate painted wood. I think it looks cheap. We'll get the same crib for this baby that DS has. Our babies get changed on the floor/bed/couch. So much easier.

This. My daughter is 2 years 7 months, still in her white crib and it looks brand new. Her baby brother will use it next summer. We also just use a changing pad on a dresser. We'll get a new (slightly smaller) one for him only because we'll keep my daughter's in her room (and I think hers will be to big for his room).

  • I was going to do a white mini crib that converted to a twin bed, but now I'm getting another one for free.

    image

  • We are doing either a gray crib (for a boy), or re-painting a Jenny Lind crib in gold (for a girl). I am not a fan of the combos, because to me they just don't look very nice, but I think if I was limited in space I would reconsider. I also won't be doing a convertible crib (that converts beyond toddler bed), because by then I will probably be sick of the crib style anyway.

  • I want a black one that is a sleigh style that converts to a toddler bed. I like the white ones but I feel they are very girly. And I want to be able to use the crib for future babies of both genders. And I am not a fan of the oak wood ones.

  • For DD, we had a black crib.  This baby will be getting a white crib.  For the changing table, we put a changing pad on top of the dresser, which is currently black with hot pink handles.  We may have to switch those up depending on what this baby is.

  • @eltrain5---check to see if BRU still has that style in stock! We love that crib and dresser set, but that style is the 'old' one. They have designed a newer frame, more square, so the round supply is limited. We actually went to check them out and liked the new style just as much!
  • We have a white Sundvik crib from IKEA. It has held up really well so we'll get another one for our baby boy. We opted not to get a changing table and we would just change her on the floor on a changing pad. It was just a whole lot easier.

  • We have a combo crib and changing table. We love it and are thinking of doing it with baby #2. Not only is it a crib and changing table but it grows with baby. The crib converts to a toddler bed and then to a full size bed. The changing table becomes a bedside table. Yes, the changing table is a little smaller but we haven't had any issue with the size and DD is now 14 months old. The one we have has 3 drawers and 3 shelves. I haven't decided what to do for baby #2 but I know DH wants to get the same thing we have have DD.
  • We're reusing the same crib that we used for my son for the new baby. It's by Sorelle...they have beautiful cribs (ours is a 4 in 1) as well as armoires, dressers, etc. We just got the crib and armoire. We use the top of a dresser as the changing table.

  • We did a dark wood last time, so this time I want a white crib. We also have a very nautical/beachy style home. So, I want to continue with that and I have fallen for a bead board style crib.

I like getting a dresser and putting a changing pad on top instead of an actual changing table. We did that last time and it worked out really well.
  • Are white cribs too girly? I really like how they look and would look nice in a grey/white nursery that I'm thinking of. I'm not sure if dark wood is just more versatile.

I don't think so. I plan on using a white crib with our boy.

We picked a dark cherry crib (convertible) and matching changing table/dresser combo. We were concerned we might get tired of the white. I have to say, we got a set from Target (Simmons Maddison collection) and i'm surprised by the high quality despite very affordable price. I had been looking at Pottery Barn for quite a while but glad I went with something a bit more affordable, now that I can see the quality in-person.

  • @MrsRage I don't think white is too girly. I think the style of crib is what plays in that factor! Get your white girl! If I don't paint mine a color it will be regardless of gender
  • I just got a 2012 Graco Stanton crib and matching changing table both in espresso off Craigslist for 100 bucks. If that's not a great deal, I don't know what is.

@LilNunz1 That's wonderful! It just seems crazy to me to spend $1000-1500 on a brand new nursery set that you may only use for a few years.

I'm also eyeing an espresso glider with cream colored upholstery that is $125 but I'm guessing I could get it for $100. If it's still around next week, that baby will be mine!

  • We have a natural wood color crib and I love it.   It is a convertable crib but we will only use it for the toddler stage.  We have plenty of extra beds in our families.   DD's walls are bright baby blue with pink curtains and bright colors everywhere.   I really like it but wasn't sure at first.   We are going to get the same color I think but not sure yet.   Baby will take over the nursery so I will have to see if I need to make any changes once we know what we are having!

  • Great advice ladies. I'm just now really starting to look at cribs. We live in an apartment so I am considering the combo. But I wanted to see if anyone else had the problem I've run into--I went to buy buy Baby and found one I liked. So I took a picture the name and thought I would go home and look at it on the website and see what kind of reviews it got. Turns out it is nowhere to be found on the website. How frustrating! The Little Castle Treasure glider/recliner we ordered is also not on the website, or anywhere else on the internet that I can find. Has anyone else run into this issue of furniture in BBB or BRU not being available online? I have a feeling that there must be companies that sell the same furniture to the different stores but label them as the brand of the store they will be sold in.(similar to how one company might make 1 towel that is then labeled as Walgreens, target, etc based on who is selling it). This makes it very frustrating to not be able to see any reviews! Thanks!

We chose the same set that we got for DS for DD. We really loved it for him and didn't want to take a chance in getting something that we didn't love, and the color looks great with our carpet and the color of the walls.  I really wanted to go with white but I was afraid it wouldn't look good with the room.

Here it is.  The dresser has the top molding that is removable, and it works great to put the changing pad right ontop of the dresser.

  • We were going to go with a white/espresso combination, but DH thought it "looked to girlie", so we settled on an espresso crib from BRU. The matching dresser was like $700, so we found a cheaper one at Ikea for $299.

  • We already have a dresser of the right size to use as a changing table (and I don't like to have extra stuff taking up space), so we are just getting a crib.  We are going with a dark wood finish just because it matches our house and other furniture better.  I have known plenty of people who have had white cribs and they don't look worn or dirty with time.
