Parenting after a Loss

Sometimes I feel terrible.

My daughter passed away on July 24 2009, two weeks after she was born. My oldest son was 1 1/2 and my second son was born two years later. I have pictures of my daughter and while my oldest now knows she is his baby sister who died my youngest is still to young to understand. Sometimes when I am holding her pictures and crying my youngest will come up to me and say"its okay mommy, don't be sad." For some reason this makes me feel happy and terrible all at the same time. Happy because he is such a caring boy but terrible because no child should feel they have to comfort their mommy.

Re: Sometimes I feel terrible.

  • I am so very sorry for the loss of your daughter. I think it is wonderful that your son knows who his sister is and is able to offer you comfort. I child's comfort is so precious because it is so honest and comes out of such love.

As BandEddie noted, your boys sound amazingly compassionate. You should be so proud to be raising them. You will never truly "get over" the loss of your daughter, but I hope that you can see her in both of your boys as you watch them grow. She will always be with you and your boys. ((HUGS))

  • I can only imagine how hard that must be! He sounds like a real sweetheart. And you're showing him that you can feel hurt and sadness, too, which is actually a WONDERFUL thing for him. He has the opportunity to s compassion to someone he loves. Lots of hugs.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. As people said, as your boys get older they will understand better. We plan to take our little guy to see his brothers gravestone even though he's too small to get it yet.

I like to think DS met his brother in heaven before he came to us maybe the same is true of your younger son and that's why he's so compassionate.

  • Thank you ladies. I hope your right and they will continue to be caring and compassionate as they grow and don't let the stereotypes of what a man should be influence them.
