Transitioning out of the Merlin sleep suit/getting used to sleeping on tummy (XP)

My DS has been wearing the Merlin Magic sleep suit to bed every night since just before he turned 3 months old. He is now 7 1/2 months and he is starting to roll in it. I know he's not supposed to be using it anymore once he can roll in it so I want to get him used to sleeping without it. The main problem is he has no idea that he can sleep on his tummy. Once he rolls onto his tummy he thinks it's play time. I tried a fleece sleep sack a couple of nights and he woke up a ton during the night since it's so much easier to roll in. How did you transition out of the sleep suit and/or get your baby comfortable with sleeping on their tummy?

  • Does he roll all the way over in his sleepsack and then wake up?  I wish Jack would sleep on his tummy but since transitioning out he sleeps on his side. I also found that he hated the Halo sleep sack because it gave him too much freedom and all he wanted to do was play with it.

  • @oohgurl He rolls all the way over in both the sleep suit and the sleep sack. I'm not sure if he's waking himself up rolling over or if he first wakes up and then rolls over. Sometimes he starts fussing right away, other times he plays for awhile then fusses. One time he stayed happily on his tummy for 20 minutes before he got upset.

The other issue is that he does not fall asleep on his own in the crib yet. I still nurse or rock him to sleep and then move him to the crib. I was just starting the no cry sleep solution (where you very gradually reduce your steps of helping them back to sleep) when he started waking up even more due to rolling. So I'm not sure whether to first transition him out of the Merlin and then go back to sleep training or do both at once.

Thanks for the sleep sack rec. I will look into it. I feel like eventually he will be a side sleeper because that's how he falls asleep after nursing. I just don't know how to help him realize that he can sleep in positions other than his back in the crib.

  • Try putting him down on his tiny and rubbing his back and just have it be relaxing and shooting and see if he will put his head down.
