I always do the kiss test in the middle of the forehead. If something feels off, I take a temp in the armpit. If that's questionable, we do a rectal temp.
Otherwise, no, I'm not overly concerned that any of my kids are going to have fevers without my knowledge.
a friend of mine said to feel behind her neck. If that feels warm, and she's acting off then I take her temperature, otherwise, I figure she'll let me know if something is wrong.

This. I feel the back of his neck or his chest if he seems warm. If you're worried definitely take LOs temp but I agree with PPs that you'll likely know if something is off.
I'm paranoid, so I use a forehead thing to take LO's temp quite frequently, usually after his first morning diaper change. If that were to be higher than normal I would investigate further, but he always seems warm first thing in the morning and is always fine.
I do the kiss test as well. DD has "periodic fever syndrome" so I have gotten incredibly good at being able to feel a fever. I can usually feel DD's head and tell what degree her temp will be, but she has run a fever once every 3-5 weeks for the last 2 years... If you think LO feels warm- I would start with armpit temp and if that seems high move to rectal temp.
