Cloth Diapering

Intro and Question about BG 4.0

I am new to cloth diapering and this board.  My DS will be 11 months next week and I decided to make the switch during the black friday sales.

Has anyone found the fit of the BG 4.0 not true to size based on weight?  Does the fit improve when baby is not in between sizes?  DS weighs around 18.5 pounds and has an average torso length but short legs. I first tried the diapers on the second size and they were not fitting great around his legs and were VERY bulky.  I didn't have issues with leaking but they didn't look right.  I then put them back to size 1 and they seemed to fit better.  The diapers are still pretty bulky on him even on the first size but I'm guessing maybe it's because of the way he's built.  I also have some Flip and Thirstie covers with inserts/prefolds and the Thirsties don't seem quite as bulky.

Thanks for your input!

Re: Intro and Question about BG 4.0

  • They are going to seem bulky compared to a disposable, especially a pocket with a microfiber insert. I do have times when I don't like the fit of my BGs, but usually I like the fit of something else in my stash during those times. I definitely don't worry about recommended weights. I just use what works. :)

If you want a trimmer fit look into getting some bamboo inserts. Also Grovia AIOs, Grovia AI2s, Babykicks pockets, and Best bottoms with cotton hemp inserts are all very trim.

  • welcome!  I think you just have to play around with the rise snaps to see what the best fit is.  BG's are pretty wide through the crotch (4.5"), so they are usually more bulky than other diapers.

my son is 8 months and barely 16lbs…we're still down on the smallest rise setting :-/

  • My son is 2 years old and weighs 27 lbs but is still on the second rise setting in his BG 4.0's. You just have to play around to see what will fit best on your baby.

  • CDs are bulkier than disposables. That's just a fact. If you aren't getting leaks, and your LO can move you are fine. They just take a little getting used to. Embrace the fluff!!!

  • I hate the bulk of the microfiber inserts. I use bamboo and they are super trim!

  • DS has been following the .4%ile curve for weight and the 4.0 took the longest before we got a decent fit with it. We have always gotten a better fit with Thirsties.
  • Thanks for the input and advice!  This is all new to me but I'm looking forward to experimenting and figuring out what works best for us!
