17 mo and still CIO...help!

We sleep trained DD when she was 5 or 6 months. Worked like a charm. Even though she might have cried herself to sleep it would be less than 5 minutes most nights, rarely more than 10. And about20% of the time she would go down without any crying at all.

But... She is 17 mo now and still CIO. In fact I think she is getting louder, crying longer, and rarely goes down without crying. Sometimes she'll stop crying for five minutes then start up again.

We have tried earlier bedtimes. Now we are trying later bedtimes. She sleep 12 hours every night and naps two to 2.5 hours in the day. She is a happy child otherwise.

Is this normal? What are we doing wrong??? What should we try next??

  • It sounds like she's doing pretty well. How long are we talking about with the crying at bedtime? Some kids just need to release tension before they can fall asleep. I know mine isn't going to give in to sleeping until she's had one last big wail.

Also, wow your kid sleeps a lot. Jealous! Mine is 16mo and she sleeps 10hrs a night and 1.5-2 at nap time. Wish she would go for 12 Overnight!

  • My 18 month old goes down without crying, but she usually wakes us 1 to 2 times on average. Occasionally, I will try and comfort her back to sleep, but mostly she CIO, and she will cry anywhere from ten minutes to a half hour. We're all exhausted. I don't know if it's normal or not, but you can find solace knowing you're not the only one who still has sleep issues.

  • Maybe try not letting her cry alone?

We always spend time with DD until she falls asleep.
Ditto, just hang out with her and cuddle with her before bed.
