Flying with baby - bottle question

I know many of you have flown already with baby, so please let me know how you brought baby's formula or breast milk on the plane.

I FF now, but since switching from BM I still continue to prepare all bottles the night before, store in the fridge, and warm up throughout the day.  When we go somewhere I transport the bottles in the little insulated bag that we got from the hospital with the freezer pack.

Will TSA allow premade bottles with a freezer pack on the plane?  I feel like they have to because of moms that pump, but I can't find any specific info on this.

I feel pretty confidant beyond this with traveling.  Wish me luck flying for the first time with baby on Christmas day!  (it will also be my 8yo step son's first flight!)

Re: Flying with baby - bottle question

  • You can bring breastmilk with freezer packs through security. Just tell them what it is and they'll likely use that explosive wand on it (that's what they did all the times I've traveled). I the heat the bottles with hot water.

  • Yup, I believe they say "reasonable quantities" are acceptable. Why not mix as you go? I think heating up on the go is going to be a huge pain in the arse. Not to mention lugging around a freezer bag.
  • I pack bottles filled with purified water and I have a formula container that can hold 4 servings worth and pours in individual servings. They just scan scan bottles in special security thing. If you don't want to wait for that you can always but purified water once past security. My baby takes room temp bottles, though, so heating wasn't an issue. If I ever had to ask flight attendant for water, they would ask if I wanted hot or cold.
Is this some special type of container you can buy?  I use some type of crappy tupperware thing that is always messy and cumbersome and am looking for an easier alternative.

  • FWIW, security allowed me to bring my water bottle through since it was to mix with the formula. They checked it for explosives, but hey-I saved money!

I also have the formula dispenser. You can fit six ounces in each. Love it!l
  • This is exactly why I need to spend more time on here.  I don't know anyone with a baby and I cannot believe I have been living for so long without knowing about useful stuff like this.

  • I BF and even I was able to take my water through no questions asked in Louisville, Atlanta, and Cancun because I had a baby. They see it everyday. I also got to wear her through in Louisville and Atlanta, and they just used the explosive detection wand on my arms.. Cancun made me take her off and carry her. :(

Also, bring your boppy! Someone on this board suggested it before I went on vacation and it was so helpful! Made for a much more comfortable flight, both when I fed her and when she fell asleep.

Here's us on the plane. (And yay for free drinks in economy plus!) :D

@KentuckyKate, I recommended bringing the Boppy. Yay, I'm so excited that I actually contributed useful information to another person on this board. Ha ha ha.
