Talk to me about these winter colds...

I'm guessing they're going around everywhere 'cause 'tis the season. I've been fighting off one that starts with an extreme sore throat and progresses into cough, headache, congestion, aches, all that good stuff. It seems everyone around here is taking about 2 weeks to fight it off and many are ending in ear infections, sinus infections, and bronchitis. Seeing as how it's viral, antibiotics do nothing until you reach that point. At day 7, I got red, angry sores on the back of my tongue and throat. I've NEVER had this happen before and they hurt like hell. Doc says it's probably due to lowered immune system thanks to pregnancy but still sounds viral (no signs of strep). I've used my humidifier, Olbas oil, gargled salt water, drink insane amounts of water and tea with honey, and try to rest. Has anyone else had the sores pop up?? Also, anyone have any other home remedies they've found successful at beating the cold while pregnant?

ETA: I have already spoken to my midwife and she suggests home remedies like these to ease my symptoms and keep infection from developing as I def don't have any yet. You just have to let these things run their course and make yourself comfy (don't want anyone to think I'm trying to substitute proper medical care). I couldn't find a previous post on this but if I missed it, I apologize!

  • I make a drink that is made of hot water with honey, apple cider vinegar, tsp of cayenne pepper and tsp of ginger. I think it is intended for coughs but perks me up overall when I feel bad. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Mine started about 2 days ago with a sore throat, nausea (cuz I needed more of that) and cough. DD started Monday with a fever. We just thought it was from teething. I've been sucking on candy canes and I'm going to make some hot cocoa. Steamy showers have been helping with the congestion. I hope it goes away soon.

    Feel better!
  • I'm a believer in steamy showers, followed by slathering myself with Vicks Vaporub on my neck, chest and back.  I'll throw on some flannel PJs and crawl into bed. I usually start to feel better in the morning.

  • I've got it too, I'm just trying the same things you listed. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm a firm believer in neti pot. It rinses out all the gunk stuck in your nasal passage and back of the throat. I am just getting over a cold that started on Monday. Still a bit congested and I feel dehydrated, but I find that colds don't seem to stick around as long since I started my neti pot routine a year ago. Make sure the water is warm, not cold or hot (obviously). Hope you feel better soon!
  • When my cold moved to my sinuses, I bought some Simply Saline spray! It saved my life! Literally, within 12 hours I felt better! And now when I'm starting to feel conjested and dry I use a squirt. It is very similar to the netipot, I just could never master the use of the neti!
