High-Risk Pregnancy

Absent end diastolic flow

I've been having regular monthly growth scans for different reasons.. At my last one they did cord dopplers and found AEDF. Google is scaring me and I'm trying not to look too much up. They found it on Wednesday, and wanted to check me again on friday (today) and I have another appointment on Monday. They've put me on "light activity" but not bed rest, and keep telling me to make sure I'm feeling enough movement from baby. They also told me that if at any point the doctors don't like what they see, I could be sent to L&D for more monitoring. There was mention of steroid shots today, but I don't know when they would happen.
They think it may be caused by pre-e, and they're doing a blood panel now. I've had a ton(A TON) of swelling and my blood pressure was elevated at the appointment today. They also talked about IUGR but told me it's not classified as that until he's under 10th percentile- he's at 30th now, down from 47th a month before. I'll be 30 weeks tomorrow.

Does anyone have experience with any of this?

Re: Absent end diastolic flow

  • With my first pregnancy I found out I had AEDF at 25 weeks.  I was put off work and given the steroid shots the same day.  I delivered at 32w2d after my water broke.  Once they found it I saw the specialist 3x per week for cord dopplers and monitoring.  My AEDF was due to improper cord insertion/placenta problems.  My understanding is that there isn't much you can do except take it easy and I was told to up my protein intake to help with growth.  By the time I delivered, my son was around the 6th percentile.  It is scary but with proper monitoring you may be able to get quite a bit farther along.  Are you going to have regular cord dopplers?

  • Thanks for the info @doanders! I think they're planning on having me come in 3 times a week to check on it, but we just take things one appointment at a time. We haven't discussed a cause, but they think it might be related to pre-e or something like it? There was mention of steroid shots on Friday but they weren't done. They're doing a blood panel for pre-e(I think for HELLP as well?) and told me to do lots of kick counts.
Do you think you could have gotten to full-term(ish) if your water hadn't broken? Were you on complete bed rest?

  • I also did lots of kick counts.  I wasn't on full bed rest just modified activity.  In retrospect I wish I had taken it a little easier and may have made it a little further.  My doctor thought I would make it even further than I did, she was surprised when I went into labor.  Despite an early delivery and 4 week NICU stay, DS did very well and is a healthily 2 year old now.  Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information out there and Google will do nothing but scare you.  The time in between appointments can be very stressful but the dopplers and bio-physicals will help put your mind at ease.  I hope you get some answers soon!
