Croup anyone?

Anyone has experience with croup? Zoe has been breathing pretty loud/weazy and I've been taking her to the pediatrician almost once a week. They keep saying it's just a cold (her lungs are clear) and to do a saline nebulizer, keep her hydrated and elevated but not working that much. An ENT specialist thinks she has croup so he prescribed steroid medication (like they give in asthma) to use in the nebulizer. She's gotten a bit better since we've used it (since last Friday) but not 100%. Anyone else been through this and how long does it typically last? We have a follow up with the ENT on Monday but was wondering if it's normal to last this long.

DD 1 has gotten it a couple times although she was over a year old the first time she had it. She would first get a cold and then it would turn into croup. She would get a barky cough during the night and be really noisy with breathing. She would only have the barky cough for a day or two.

I have no personal experience with this but, my friend would keep the house cold and would even take her son outside in the cold to help his breathing.

Both oft sons just had croup at Thabksgiving and both had middle of the night ER visits from it. It took both of them a good week before they were better. That cough sticks around for a long time. I did start noticing improvements the day after the steroids were given, however.

Do you use a humidifier at night?  ODD had croup several times, once bad enough to go to the ER.  As PP mentioned the cold air can really help as well as the bathroom with a hot shower running.

My LO has it too, but I also noticed she has a bit of "teething" action too, which is making her seem more miserable than just croup. We did the steam shower for 15 mins and then out in the cold of a few mins to help clear her lungs- as recommended by pedi. I hope your LO gets better soon.

Thank you ladies. Seems that the cough is almost gone it's just the heavy/wheezy breathing. I skipped a day of treatments for the steroids since I was worried about giving it too much and she did not react well to that so i think i'll keep them going till we have our follow up as they seem to be helping. I always have her out and about so hopefully the cold air will help too. And yes we have the humidifier on at night - I always wonder if it does anything but I'll keep trying.

Hi. My 3mo has had croup, bronchiolitis since last Thursday . We took steroids for three days w minimal improvement in barking cough only, breathing and congestion still bad, saw pedi today and now DS DX with rt ear infection and given ABX. Ugh! I haven't slept in a week. Tried vaporizer, hot steam, sleeping upright, saline nasal spray with nose Frieda ... New suction device works great, found at buybuybaby. Wish I had gotten it 6 days ago. Good luck! This is so scary and exhausting! I wish no body else's baby to get sick like this!
