Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Did anyone else do genetic testing?

We opted to do genetic testing in addition to pathology from our d&c three weeks ago and we got our results back today. It came back as male with abnormal chromosomes. When I asked what was wrong, they said there were 92 chromosomes (tetraploidy) and that the chances of it happening again is equivalent to lightening hitting the exact same spot twice. I feel more at peace knowing the sex of the baby and what went wrong. Did anyone else opt to do it?

Re: Did anyone else do genetic testing?

  • I had it done with my 3rd loss. My 1st one it wasn't an option & my 2nd loss was a blighted ovum.

    Mine came back completely normal.

If I should have another loss at some point, I probably wouldn't do the genetic testing again.

  • If I have repeat miscarriages I would like to get genetic testing done. I would probably go with having my husband's semen genetically analyzed first though. We already know he has abnormal morphology, so more likely than not, the genetic abnormality that caused our blighted ovum came from the after affects of his four rounds of chemotherapy.

  • yes, we did. it's mc #3 ,we are just waiting for results now but i was told not to be hopeful since we discovered at 12 weeks no more heartbeat and measuring 8 weeks... and typically you need to test right away...

  • I ordered it for mc #1 and am awaiting results nervously.  I will be upset if it's the "nothing is wrong" because I know I have fibroids and am so worried now for so many reasons.
MC 13w2d D&C 01/03/2014.  Miss you, my little butterfly.
  • Im waiting for results as well. I was told this test only tests for chromosomal defects.  So it wouldn't tell you if it was a heart defect or something like that.  So it doesn't mean nothing was wrong. Am I correct on this?  Thats what my dr told me.
  • @heatherfaith Yes it tests only for "genetic defects" is what I was told.  I suppose I worded that poorly.  It would just be nice to have an answer, especially one like @jessimi06 got - it would ne nice to hear that it was unlikely to happen again.  I am a worrier...

  • this is what my dr suspects / explained to me but the test results should give us a better idea. I keep mc in the first trimester- the most common defect for repeated mc in first trimester is basically one parent can be a carrier of a defect where a chromosome basically flips and attaches to the wrong end and everything is ok for a while but then your body notices the flip and ends the pregnancy , if that is the genetic defect they find it's a 1 in 4 chance it will happen each attempt . so the hope here we are just play with very poor odds:/

good luck to everyone on their results I hope yours turn out in your favor. huge hugs this waiting game is no fun!

  • We did genetic testing for my second m/c and it was a male with trisomy 13. The doctor tested both DH and I for balanced translocations but we were both normal. We got the green light to try again and the same thing happened again. We saw a strong heartbeat at 7 weeks then at my next u/s nothing. I'm waiting for the results of this last loss. I keep hearing chromosomal issues are a fluke but it seems like something is definitely wrong.

I find this so worrisome. Do any of you notice how they keep quoting these low statistics, yet there are so, so many women on here who have recurrent miscarriages with no real explanation? I'm starting to think that all the current research is BS. Also, since I know my m/c (partial molar pregnancy) was caused by too many chromosomes in the sperm, or two sperm getting in and contributing double chromosomes, I began to look into scientific journals to see if there was research on paternal factors (genetic and lifestyle) that can contribute to miscarriages. The sad fact is, the research just isn't there. This makes me really angry because I feel like this is just more male-dominated-society-BS where no one considers that there could be something wrong with the man and not the woman. How can they just not research more about the sex that contributes half the genetic code?? With modern medicine you would think there would be more reliable answers, and someone would have figured out a way to prevent the alarming rate of miscarriages that happen (maybe by filtering out defective genetic material from the start??)

  • I agree @this+gamer+chick. I mentioned testing my husband's sperm to our RE and the instant response was "it's very unlikely it's his sperm since it's fertilizing your egg".. I mean why wouldn't we at least check it off the list officially? I've read that sperm can have fragmented DNA which can cause miscarriages. I just don't see why we wouldn't at least test it since it's so easy to. I've also been looking into more natural remedies like increasing my vitamin D and zinc (I've been low in both in the past). There just had to be a connection or answer somewhere. This can't just be a fluke anymore.
