going on vacation at 35 -37 weeks; the just in case hospital bag??

I live in San Francisco.  My family is going to Lake Tahoe (about 4 hours away) for Christmas and New Years.  I'll be 35-37 weeks pregnant during this time.  I'm thinking I should bring a hospital bag just in case; better to have it and not need it than the other way!  It's my second baby and I learned the first time around to KEEP THINGS SIMPLE in terms of what to bring to the hospital.

Here's what I have.....I feel like I'm forgetting somethinig.  Any other ideas are much appreciated :-)

3 baby t-shirts

2 baby sleepers

1-2 baby hats

NB diapers and wipes (for trip back to SF)

comfy jammies and socks for me

I figure if anything else comes up, my family can bring it to me and/or purchase it for me. The local hospital is supposedly wonderful :-)

TIA

Have you talked to your insurance company? Some of them won't cover delivery at an out of network hospital.

Do you mean the hospital near Lake Tahoe? "Supposedly wonderful" could mean anything!
Also, I would seriously consider checking with your insurance first to see if they cover out of state medical, many do not.

My midwife advises against travelling more than 1 hour drive from home after 36 weeks.  Have you asked your OB/midwife?

This for sure. I'd be way nervous about being that far away... Not only problems with insurance but your doc knows you, knows if you have any risk factors, knows everything where as a doc at another hospital does not. I'd suggest you at least get a copy of your medical records and talk to your doc.

I have spoken with my dr.  She said everything sounds alright.  We'll be driving back on or a few days before I'm 36 wks. We did decided to shorten the trip.  I will call my insurance company just to varify.  Thanks!!

This. Kinda crazy in my opinion.

Yes. My OB said I'm fine as long as I don't ski.  (I think she was being sarcastic; I just laughed.  NO - I'm not touching my skis!!!)

I just got off the phone with my insurance provider.  I'm covered at the local hospital for any/all emergencies.

I've had friends deliver there who had great experiences.

I don't really think its all that crazy.  It sounds like there's a back-up plan in case she goes into labor and the odds of going into labor that early are probably overall slim (especially if her midwife / doctor does't think she's close).  I'd do it, so long as I knew the insurance stuff was in order and the doctor was fine with it.  I'm pretty sure my doctor would say it was fine -- he's pretty laid back and easy going about most stuff -- and my pregnancy has been rolling right along with no issues.
