High-Risk Pregnancy

Autoimmune ladies - or anyone taking Prednisone in first tri? [Intro}

Hi ladies,

Looks like I'll be joining you, if you'll have me.  I am 6 weeks 6 days today.  My history is in my siggy (though it won't let me update my most recent news) but I am 42 with a rare autoimmune disease (suspected Behchet's), Factor V Leiden (hetero) and have had 5 miscarriages.  Most were very early, but I had one last year after seeing the heartbeat which was likely linked to an autoimmune flare.  I started getting high fevers and no one could figure it out, and I miscarried soon after.

With this pregnancy, after extensive research and debate, we have been on a low dose of Prednisone that was started a few weeks prior to transfer. I do attribute it to our success thus far.  My RE doesn't think I need to continue it, but I feel like I should stay on through first tri. Do any of you have any experience with this?  Would love to hear any stories, if you are willing to share.

Thank you!

  • I have an auto immune disease (myasthenia gravis) and was on 10-20 mg of pred my entire first pregnancy. They may keep you on it or wean extremely slowly. All was fine with it for me (other than the usual fun pred side effects).

    Although I'm not currently pregnant, I also have been on prednisone with both of my MMCs. Due to my lupus I will have to remain on it throughout my pregnancy. My dr said that if it goes above 60mg that's when there is more concern it can cause possible issues with the baby but my MFM agrees the control it provides over my autoimmune issues outweighs the risk. And I'm currently on 10mg. Good luck!

  • I did take predinsone through the first trimester for suspected autoimmune factors leading to recurrent pregnancy loss.  As I recall, I began the wean around 12 weeks or so, and it took me more than a week or two to come off.

    I believe that the predinsone was a major factor in my having a successful pregnancy resulting in the delivery of a very healthy litttle boy!  I would absolutely do it again.

    PM me if you want to discuss further.
