Endometrial biopsy?

Has anyone ever had to have an endometrial biopsy? I was encouraged to do this procedure before possibly doing ivf..What does it show? Is it worth it if you're have ivf anyway? I have had many iui s and nothing has worked yet.. I do have one child from iui 3 years ago.. After trying for 1.5 years. I would appreciate any information!

I did before my successful IVF. My doctor had it biopsied for abnormal cells (none) although she said the main reason was to promote a healthy lining. Basically by disrupting the endometrial lining in the cycle before, you promote the lining to heal itself in the next cycle, aiding in implantation of the embryos. I have no idea if it contributed to my success, but I'm glad I did it. It was covered by my insurance and not much more painful than a pap. It took about 5 minutes in the RE's office and was followed by a few hours of light bleeding / spotting and minimal cramping. Best of luck.

  • After 2 failed IVFs I wanted more answers. Re sent me for a bunch of tests. I opted for an endo biopsy even though we didn't suspect endo. We are unexplained so I am searching for answers.  The endo biopsy was negative. It was very painful.  It took me a month to feel back to normal.  I was sore when I sat too long and then stood up. Some people have way less pain then I did. I am glad I did it though bc I want to rule everything out.  GL

  • I've had two- one was to help determine if there was anything going on with my uterus. The second was part of a study to well, study my uterus. The first one I wasn't told to take pain reliever beforehand and I wanted to crawl up the bed- it was a very painful 2 minutes. I was sore (like period cramps) for a few hours. The second one I did take pain reliever and it was also very uncomfortable- but not as bad and didn't feel it for much more than an hour.
    Good luck!

I had one last month during a study and I was so nervous. It was not horrible! I was told to count to 10 while they did it and I had one sharp cramp at the end. The worse part was the speculum because it has to be placed deep and in a certain spot for the biopsy. I will be starting another study next month and have to have a endometrial scraping/disruption and I will be nervous but not as much as the first time. Its the unknown that's scary. I did take like 600mg of ibuprofen before the biopsy.
    Good luck!
P.S. - I had no pain after the biopsy just during.
