How to turn off the brain?

Hey Ladies,

So I had some work stuff hit the fan last night (luckily not my fault) but my mess to deal with now.  I really struggle to turn off my mind when I go to bed when stuff like this happens. Last night I was up until 3:30 am b/c I couldn't sleep. Even though I'm super tired I know I'll have the same issue tonight.  What are some good ways to zone out so you can sleep?

  • I downloaded some meditation apps that helped me calm down when I was wrapping up my dissertation.  I found them helpful to play from my phone on my nightstand.  Good luck.

  • I knit until I'm cross-eyed while watching a movie I've seen a million times.

  • Ambien is the only thing that worked for me :( sorry! Maybe try Benadryl?

  • Yeah sometimes it helps me to write down my thoughts and I feel calmer that they are there the next morning. Also I watch mindless tv (HDTV is my personal fav)!
  • No comments on naked Adam Levine?  I still think thats the BEST way to get your mind off work... it works for me anyhow.

Are we allowed to ake Melatonin while pregnant?  I know thats what I do when i can't get my mind to shut off when not pregnant.  Unisom might work too, and that is ok while PG.  Good luck!

  • I use my Hypnobirthing sleep breathing technique. Makes me fall asleep every time! Breathe in for a 4-count, out for an 8-count. Hope this helps!

  • I tried hypnobabies when I was pregnant with DD. It really didn't help me that much while in labor but the tracks relaxed me so much I would fall asleep before they were over every night. I also listened to a certain track in the car on the way to the doctor's office (where my BP skyrockets) and it really helped to keep me calm and my BP normal.

  • I just give up on forcing it, get up, and try to mark a few things off my to do list (though I have stopped sending work emails when I'm up in the middle of the night - I got sick of my boss commenting on my 3am emails.). For me, it helps to just work through the over thinking.

Sorry ladies!! My freaking computer crashed on me yesterday! GAH I'm not working on a loner (PC and I usually live on a MAC).  The Adam Levine pic is amazing - I love him. Although I do agree - staring at that does the opposite of turning my brain off :)
  • Try keeping a journal or notepad on your nightstand, before you go to bed at night, allow yourself 10 minutes to write about your day, or things that are stressing you out. If you wake up in the middle of the night stressing about something, add it to the list.

Deep breathing and progressive relaxation techniques

Try an imagery technique of your favorite place (beaches and lakes are popular), imagine using all of your senses to experience what it would like to be there. Can you feel the sun? The breeze? Hear the waves? Etc.

These are some of my favorite. Hope you find something that helps you!

  • Am I the only person not really into Adam Levine?

Op - I usually watch tv. I know it is not recommended but really allows me to get out if my head. I watch a lot of crime shows late or history. Dh thinks I'm crazy but they make me think my life is not so bad and then I sleep. Well, sleep until I pee
