Elevated TSH Levels

Anyone have experience with this? I just got a call from a nurse at my OB office saying my bloodwork came back showing TSH levels of 4.310 which is outside the normal range of 0.4-4.2 (barely outside....). I was instructed to make an appointment with my PCP and then maybe I will have to see an endocrinologist. I didn't have this issue with DD so this is all new to me.

Re: Elevated TSH Levels

  • I was told my thyroid levels were elevated (meaning hypothyroid) when with bloodwork after my BFP as well- I never had issues before.  Not only are my TSH levels high, but the antibodies are incredibly high as well, which means my body doesn't know my thyroid is part of me, and is producing antibodies to attack it.

They'll probably put you on levothyroxine, which is a tiny pill you take in the morning about an hour before you can eat, with a full glass of water (it can blow up and get stuck in your throat if you don't follow that, so do it), and also, take your prenatals in the evening, because one can affect the absorption of the other.

The levo does a great job of regulating things, and they'll probably do a repeat test in 6 weeks to be sure that all is well.

  • I have an elevated TSH level and basically they told me I would need to be on the Synthroid medication (which has no side effects that I have noticed) and just be monitored throughout pregnancy to make sure it decreases or stays stable.

Your doctor will probably put you on the same medication and tell you to get monitored, but it is manageable and if they monitor it, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

I had elevated TSH before pregnancy. I just take synthroid for it. And they test my levels every 6 weeks to make sure it is managed during pregnancy.

Today, I am pregnant.  Today, I am happy.
    Everyone welcome
  • I have hypothyroidism normally, and really it is what everyone else said- just taking a pill.  The new recommended levels are actually between .3-3, and that is where I feel best, but everyone is different.  It is important they monitor your levels since this can affect how your entire body functions.

  • I take synthroid as well (levothyroxine). It's not a big deal. I take it first thing in the morning, 30 minutes before eating. Also, you can't take your prenatal vitamin within 4 hours of taking it. Actually, no calcium or iron supplements. It has more "rules" than most meds but I've been taking it about 5 years and I haven't had any negative side effects of anything. Hope they give you something to get it in check!

  • I had blood work done on Monday..they called today,Wednesday n said I need to call endocrinologist n start meds asap. Totally freaked me out!

  • I've had hypothyroidism since I was a teenager and have been on several different strengths over the years.  As soon as I got my BFP I called my endocrinologist and she had me recheck my levels as pregnancy can increase the levels even if you are normally within range.  She told me she wanted my levels to remain between 0.30 and 1.0 during my pregnancy.  I actually just had my levels redrawn and they were too low (0.06) so they lowered my dosage.

It's something to keep watch over, but just try not to worry.  Just remember to take it every day so your thyroid can start to regulate itself.
  • The Hcg hormone can cause a false TSH spike in early pregnancy. When my TSH tested high my RE had me test the TSH plus the T3 levels. TSH dropped but was still a tad high, but the T3 was normal. My Meds we're not changed and so far so good!
