Needing sleep

I have a friend who has a 3 week old, and I cannot remember with my ds, but how long is too long to let her cry it out? She was saying her pedi said 5 minutes, but I'm thinking 10. What would y'all say? She thinks of herself as very ap, which is why I'm asking you ladies. Thank you!

3 weeks?  I vote for zero.  Even if you choose to do CIO, that waits until six months (four at the very earliest by the most aggressive CIO supporters).  At 3 weeks, she needs to form strong attachment bonds.  Babies ARE dependent, they are NOT independent, and they won't be until they are competent at taking care of their own needs (think, like, four or five years old).

This. 3 weeks is WAY too young.

I agree completely with PP. When a newborn cries, they have a need that should be met, even if that need is just for comfort. Please ask your friend to research this carefully and to respond to her baby's needs with love. If she's AP minded, have her check out the book Nighttime Parenting, by Dr. William Sears.

Cannot do cry it out before 6 months according to pretty much ALL resources!

Truth or dare?  I guess there are more teen moms on here than I thought.  I'm not even sure today's teenagers play that game anymore...I believe it tends to be considered to immature for kids to play anymore at around age 10/11.  But maybe my Grade 6 students were all just very mature.  Man, I hope there aren't that many (or any) 12yr old moms on the bump.
